another loopy birthday

G: The news gets later and later. a victim of John's poker addiction. Maybe one day we'll skip a week and then be ahead. HA!

It's been a good birthday week. Saturday I took part in another raku workshop, this time at Montpelier. I had some nice results.

Luisa and her house mate Nancy were having a birthday party and invited me in on the deal, since mine was also coming up. We went to their place Saturday night and had a great time. (Mojitos!)

I stayed until the wee wee hours and then woke up too early. John and I went to visit his Aunt and Uncle who live near Ellicott City because another Aunt was visiting. We saw the Palace Family there - sister Cecily's, Dave, May and Kimberly, and later brother Bill, Dee, and Emily showed up. I played games with the girls and fell asleep on the couch for a little bit. I can't remember what we did, if anything, that night.

Wednesday was my birthday and I continued the tradition of riding roller coasters. Often I do this with Renee since her birthday is the day before mine. She, Alex, Stacy, and I went to Kings Dominion, and Andy met us there a bit later. We rode the new coaster (The Italian Job) which is a bit small but fun. There is a completely dark indoor part, and that is quite fun because you have no idea what is going to happen next.

We waited a long time to ride Volcano, of course, but we had a lot of fun playing word games while waiting and time passed quickly. Then we rode in the front - I don't think I've ever ridden it anywhere else, because of the way it is set up, you have only a little bit longer to wait for the front once you get to the ride. Every time I ride it I think it might be my favorite roller coaster, but I usually think that after riding Apollo's Chariot too. But thinking about it now, I think Volcano is the winner. We'll see what I say next time I get off Apollo's Chariot (at Busch Gardens) though.

Anyway, it's such a blast. Andy caught up with us there and we proceeded to ride every coaster except the kiddie Scooby Doo one, because we didn't really have time. Fortunately we didn't have to wait too long for the Hypersonic XLC. Same as last time, it seems to be closed down a lot. We saw it running empty and went to ride the Hurler. From the top of the Hurler Andy saw it was open and we headed for it.

That ride is impossible to describe. Here are some pics.

And here is a review from when it opened.

I loved watching people getting blasted off. The look of surprise! You just can't prepare yourself for that 0 - 80mph in 1.8 seconds.

Everyone had a great time and Stacy drove both ways—thanks again Stacy! I got pretty tired by the time I got home and couldn't shake the sleepys all the next day. Still a bit tired today but I have some energy.

Thursday I taught a kids clay workshop, then met up with Izolda to go to the newish Trader Joe's in Silver Spring. It's actually pretty close and nice and new and spacious. I got a lot of dried fruit.

I went home and took a nap and then Rich and Izolda had us (me, John and Lori) over for dinner for my birthday. She made veggie sushi and it was as delicious as always. Izolda makes the best sushi. Thanks guys!

happiness seeds

My feelings of happiness are fleeting, and often just haphazardly happen through happenstance. I can increase my chances by planting "happiness seeds"activities that have successfully produced moments of happiness in the past.

Happiness comes in different flavors. There's the happiness of moving, which I get from running, walking, jumping, climbing, juggling, and riding bicycles, motorcycles and roller coasters.

There's a pleasant feeling of happiness that I get from seeing or being nearby nice things, like puppies, trees, music, friends, motorcycles, rainbows, and campfires.

Then there's a little deeper, more subtle feeling of happiness that I can get from altruistic actions, like helping friends move, teaching people new things, giving to a charity, or walking a dog.

And there's that bright spark of what I call "aha-happiness"—the happiness of discovery or learning something new, like stumbling upon a tasty mushroom, learning how to fold a shirt, designing a game, programming or solving an equation, seeing a new species of animal for the first time, writing poetry, figuring out what poker hand another player is holding, or finding a climbing route up a cliff.

These flavors of happiness can overlap, of course. And of course Gina incorporates all these kinds of happinesses, and helps me grow my happiness seeds. For me, she's a happiness flower. Happy birthday Gina!
