 Mobius Morphs

J: One of our favorite unklings—Lori's son Jonathan—visited last weekend. We really enjoyed his company. Gina, Lori, Jon and I enjoyed a little campfire and a little beer. Gina got her first hot marshmallow burn, she was enjoying roasting vegan marshmallows she got from Pangea when one fell on her hand. She ran inside and ran cold water over it and then held ice on it the rest of the night. It hurt her a little as she was going to sleep but felt fine by morning. She's trying to figure out a way that the burn mark looks like Jebus, y'know, to cash in on all the attention that would generate, but it really just looks like a blob.

Anyway, Jon was interested in didgeridu, so I began some lessons in droning, vocals, reverb, and circular breathing. Jonathan is a quick learner. It helps to know how to play a trumpet, which he does. It won't be long till he's pulling with the best of 'em. We went out to the hardware store and bought some PVC tubes and "mouthpieces", and I showed him how to put together a didge for five bucks that sounds as good as any hundred dollar didge. Then we annoyed the neighbors with more beautiful blats from our newly-made tubes.

On Sunday Lori took Jonathan to the New Deal for brunch. Gina and I slept in because we're lazy late night gamers. Jonathan found the New Deal's resident guitar and played a song for Lori— he made it up on the spot. I think Lori really liked that a lot. We're all hoping Jonathan can visit again soon. Like all our unklings, he's a wonderful one.

Coming back from a good Indian dinner last Saturday, Kory was telling me about Douglas Hofstadter's Reviews of this Book idea. It immediately inspired me to create a weird story game that could be played over email, and by the time we got home Kory and I had hashed out most of the details. We called around to four prospective other players and right now we are finishing up the first Mobius Corpse story, coming soon to a web near you. We still aren't sure about a name for the game (it's really a pastime— everybody wins!). I thought Mobius Corpse was good because it alludes to Exquisite Corpse. Kory was pushing for Mobius Trip, but I think that phrase shows up too much in Google. Maybe Mobius Zombie: it keeps going and going... and it eats brains. More of this silliness to come...

G: Meanwhile I went out with Janet to one of her birthday celebration outings. We picked up her friends Becky and Todd, and went to The Diner in Adams Morgan. There was another couple already seated, and Marcia showed up soon after. We didn't get seated for about an hour, and the couple left right before we finally sat down. Appetizers, cocktails, and good conversation were had, then we walked down the street, bypassing club Heaven (the original plan) for a Kareoke bar. It was crowded and noisy, but we had another drink and eventually Marcia and Janet got to sing. We stayed a long time and I enjoyed singing along. I was surprised how popular 80's songs were with this crowd most of whom were probably born in the early 80's.

On Sunday I went with Rizolda, and met the Looneys, at a screening of Walmart - The High Cost of Low Price. Very excellent, I recommend seeing it if you can. But drag along someone who shops at Walmart. None of us ever did.

J: On Monday night I went to the New Deal to play North Star Games' new trivia game called Wits & Wagers. I'm not much of a trivia game aficionado, but Wits & Wagers was nevertheless lots of fun, and different enough from other trivia games that it deserves a positive review: unique and entertaining! For the final game of the night I ended up on a team with Kory, Dave, and two other guys [need names]. We came in second, after some showoff who played at his own table as his own team, and, uh, kicked our butts. Congrats to The North Star people, Dominic and Satish, for their new game, and lots of thanks for a well-run trivia show. Satish, as MC, even wore a tux!

One of the people helping to run the show came up to me right beforehand and said, "You must be John Cooper. I don't know why we haven't met before, but we should have." Then she started listing off family members and old friends like she lived around the corner my whole life-- which, as it turns out, she has. Her name is Mary, she was there to help run the New Deal's game night. She was very good at that-- she even took orders for food from the participants so they wouldn't have to leave their tables. She was ebullient and chatty, an excellent hostess for the evening. She said to say hi to Cecily and Thom, so if you're reading, sibs, take note in case I forget. Didn't get much time to talk with her, but she lives in town so I'm sure we'll see her again, and she let me know about some pot-luck dinners she might be throwing soon, and said she makes a scrumptious vegan mousse, so I'm sure Gina's all ready to meet her!

Gina's improving in leaps and bounds—literally—with DDR. She and Lori are cleaning up—literally—in Katamari. I'm still attempting to learn this weird game called poker. Consequently the three of us don't talk much or get many chores done, but we still make a good family.
