 Volunteers Get Fed

J: Last Friday Gina and I attended a nice little picnic put on by the GROC (Goddard Running & Orienteering Club) for course marshals and other fun run volunteers such as myself. We ate too much food and then later Gina and I carved about 7 pounds of chicken shrooms off of a stump. The chicken was too dry for Gina and Lori, So I've been eating chicken shroom sammitches every day, and adding lots of vegan mayonnaise and cheese to make them not so dry.

Friday night Gina carved a pumpkin at the New Deal Cafe, along with about 40 other Greenbelters. The New Deal has a new addition, a bigger room to host special events and musical guests.

Saturday night Gina and I participated in the annual pumpkin walk, a great Greenbelt tradition. We went as ghosts, and haunted the woods that were lit up for acres around with over 100 jack-o-lanterns. Paul and Susan labored all day to bring visitors a fantastic and unique Halloween experience. Unfortunately they did not get the help that many volunteers promised (including us; we were late, and we are very sorry) so the pumpkin walk might become a thing of the past, sadly. The Greenbelt News Review posted the wrong date, so they actually ran it on Sunday night as well, and I heard there was an amazing turnout on both nights.

Sunday morning Lori and I walked to the New Deal for brunch. It was a beautiful day, breezy, sunny and pretty Autumn colors. We met Christian and Noelle there, and also Renata, Joey, and my favorite kid Cameron. He's great. Just turned three and at the pumpkin walk I was unable to frighten him in the slightest, even with my scary face and noises.

That night Gina, Lori, Luisa and I went to the City Counsel's annual dinner that they put on for committee volunteers such as myself. We ate too much (the sweet potatoes with pecan crust was stupendous) and applauded a lot for various committee members who received awards for their time in service.

On Monday night we went to Tim & Noelle's party (another Noelle, BTW). Tim is a energetic host; he would often have drinks at the ready for anyone who even thought they might be getting thirsty. Noelle was dressed as a hospital patient, which worked well because she could incorporate her splinted sprained ankle into the costume. I love their doggies, Smokey and Buddy.

Our ongoing addictions with poker and video games continue, now with newHalloween candy added to the mix! Gobble, gobble, check, fold, repeat.

Our friend Jason's dad died. We send our sympathies and hugs to Jason and his family.
