Film at Eleven
G: On Thursday
there was another Franklin's ride, and I think that was the fourth week
in a row for me. The place was terribly crowded; there was a party at
the bar. But we found a little space for our large crowd.
On Friday I went with Janet to the Red Cross blood donation center in
Rockville. I donated blood for the first time since I was in college. I
had a history of getting pretty dizzy after donating blood or once when
I had a lot taken, so I was expecting that, but I guess since I weigh
more now than I did then, I didn't have that problem. We had lunch
afterwards at an Indian Buffet that Janet loves. The restaurant has
fabric and pillow covered benches for seating around low tablecloth
covered tables. They had a big screen and they projected Indian music
videos on them which were quite entertaining.
On Saturday went to Thom's surprise birthday party with Jenny, at Bill
and Maren's. Thom thought he was coming over for a birthday party for
Maren's dad Bob, who turned 89 the next day. We had a good time and we
were among the last to leave. I played UNO with my niece May and some
other kids. There was a nice fire that we sat around as it got later. I
punched Ken (Radagast) every time he put bamboo on the fire and it
exploded with a loud bang. There was a young English guy there who
reminds me a lot of John's brother Eric. He fell over backwards in his
chair while we were sitting around the fire and made me laugh. I told
him about all the English entertainment I was into, like Coupling (and
other shows), Eddie Izzard, the Beatles, and Paul McCartney. Jenny and
I entered a contest to see which one of us would say we wanted to leave
first. I gave in since I had to drive and I got tired. She fell asleep
on my couch.
I'd heard on the radio that there was a Short Film Festival in DC that
weekend, but it wasn't until Sunday that I checked online and found the
schedule. There was only one event left that I could make it to, so I
called Izolda and we went to Lunafest, a screening of eight short films
for, by, and about women. They were all pretty good and Izolda really
found it moving and enjoyable.
On Monday I started working again. Classes started at UM Art and
Learning Center. I have two classes there. Tuesday I had one kid's
class, but my evening class was canceled from lack of enrollment. I had
dinner with Christian and Noelle at the New Deal and then went back to
the studio and made some pots. Wednesday I had two classes. All went
well.
J: I spent the
last week and a half wrestling with a monochromator in California. I
won, but not before the monochromator ate my vacation.
The instrument I was using kept failing in strange ways, and at
inermittent times, so I burned
through several days trying
to trace and fix the problem. I'm grateful to Zendo though, for honing
my inductive reasoning skills. Otherwise I might not have thought about
checking something other than the controller logic board, or
disconnecting the hanging capacitor I soldered back on the first day.
In the end we reconnected a capacitor, replaced a logic chip, replaced
a power supply, and re-disconnected the capacitor before the system
worked right.
I did find some time to eat dinner with a few friends, including Khaled
on one night (he is also very busy), and Eric, Beth, and Elena (sp?) on
another.
Elena asked me what I've been doing for fun lately, and I told her I'm
interested in poker. Turns out she's making a living playing cash games
in card halls! Cool. After dinner with Eric, Beth, and Elena, they came
to my hotel room where we did some face diving into the bed (one of my
favorite hotel sports), autographed the bible ("with best wishes -
God"), and played three games of Zendo (I mastered one and won one) and
one game of Fluxx, which I won in three turns, luxxy me.
