 End of Summer Fun

G: Well, let's see if I can do this thing. Thursday there was another Franklin's ride. Fun as usual.

Saturday I went to Jenny's organic farm in Virginia and helped take things down. We took down and rolled up 20
0 feet of electric fence tape, yanked out another 200 feet of small electric fence that was trapped in the weeds, pulled out many tomato stakes, pulled out and rolled up irrigation systems and hoses, etc. I picked the last of her ripe tomatoes (mmmm, Sungold cherrys) and almost all the flowers, since she is going to have the whole field "bush-hogged." Then we went on a walk around the perimeter of her property. The back of her lot is wooded. After that we took showers and then discovered many teensy-tiny ticks on us. It took a while to find them all and pull them off. Jenny ended up having a poison-ivy-like reaction to the bites, but I've been fine. Anyway, she took me to dinner in the nearby town of Scottsville, at a restaurant called Magnolia. They make fresh food from local sources, and it was good, but the service was very slow. The ride to and fro the farm was very pretty as well. It's south of Charlottesville. Anyway, it felt good to do some real, productive, helpful work, and Jenny sure appreciates it, too.

On Sunday I dropped John off at the BWI bus and then went with Christian to the Eastern Market in DC. I'd never been! I did a lot of looking, mostly liked some jewelry I saw. Ate some fruit samples and bought one nectarine. It wasn't as good as the sample. After we were done there we headed over to Takoma Park for the Folk Festival. We had really good vegetarian pad Thai from one of the vendors, and super sweet lemonade that made me feel a bit sick. I saw some friends there, some of whom were vendors at the craft fair. We didn't catch any musical acts, just walked around. We did stop at the Growing Native booth. I had no idea that nurserys needed people to collect tree seeds. I think Greenbelt is a good place to collect them! I was really tired when I got home but felt better later and went to dance night at the Conservatory with Steve.

On Tuesday I went on another long trip with Jenny, this time to Rehoboth Beach. We lazed around in the sun, had goodies to eat, dunked our feet in the ocean, read magazines, listened to my solar radio, and watched dolphins. Right when we were getting off the beach to go walk around town a bit there were a lot of dolphins swimming by, jumping out of the water, splashing and flapping their tails, and generally being adorable.

Next week my long vacation from work ends. I'll be teaching pottery classes at UM Art and Learning Center and at the Greenbelt Community Center. There's still room in those classes so now is your chance to sign up! Here's the Greenbelt Recreation Department Fall Brochure, a large pdf. And here's the UM Art & Learning Center classes page.

My brother made a special dinner for some friends, and sent along the recipe. Enjoy!

Vegan Flying Spaghetti Monster

1/2 tube of 'Gimme Lean' sausage style
1/4 to 1/2 onion
2-5 cloves of garlic
1 big can of stewed tomatoes
salt/pepper
bay leaf/thyme/oregano/rosemary
lots of olive oil
12 oz. whole wheat organic spaghetti (or whatever floats your pirate boat.)

Make 'meatballs'. Fry onion in a generous amount of olive oil. Thank the FSM for creating olive oil. Have a nice glass of chianti. Worry about your contribution to global warming while the stove is on. Turn the heat down and add the garlic, spices, and meatballs. Brown the meatballs for a few minutes. If you burn your fingers on the hot pot, say "Arrrr!." Have another nice glass of chianti. Add the tomatoes to the meatballs. Let them stew a while as you cook the spaghetti. When the spaghetti is done, drain it and put it back into the pan it cooked in. Dump in the meatballs and tomato sauce. Mix it around. Add some more olive oil. Get out a magnetic levitating plate. Start the magnetic field. Add some FSM to your plate. Get a very high stool. Enjoy!
