 Laborless Days

J: We—and by "we" I mean various amorphous pluralities of people... and Ginohn—spent most of our weekend hanging around the town's Labor Day Festival. I didn't go on any rides or try my hand at any of those rigged games like "pop the balloon with a ping pong ball". (I swear that game is rigged. Well, there was this one guy who popped a balloon with a ping pong ball but I suspect he was a shill. But anyhow.) I did, however, entertain myself with one of my favorite festival pastimes: checking out all the strange carny folk. Very interesting. A fascinating collection.

We also perused a big pile of used books at the PTA book sale, and ate funnel cake. We saw grand performances by Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits and Peter Tork of The Monkees, both of whom are excellent entertainers. Peter Noone was horribly heckled by some of the town drunks, so on behalf of the City of Greenbelt, I apologize, Peter. No, I wasn't one of the drunks and even if I were I would never heckle a hermit. Please, Peters, do come back next year; we need our culture fix. I'll even buy you a beer.

At work I've started playing with "lasers" (the big kind that you strap to barracudas). We actually managed to run a few tests without burning the lab down, but just barely. those big black safety curtains smell lousy when a laser is burning a hole in them.

But my really big accomplishment this week was that I gave myself a haircut! All by myself, even! Well, it wasn't really that even, but it wasn't that bad for a first try, either. I used two different length settings on the same electric shears that Gina used on my head a few months ago, and I buzzed my noggin over the bathtub. Later Gina found a few long straggler hairs on the back of my head and snipped them off with scissors. I'll get better with practice. Now that I've baptized myself into the wonderful world of mowing my own head,
I feel a renewed sense of self confidence.

Oh, crap. Ran out of time. Um, Franklin's! Yeah! And mushroom soup! Hah! And poker! Wahoo!

See y'all next week!
