 GenCon, Poker, Life

J: The weather finally turned lovely here, but I haven't been taking as much advantage of it as I should. I've discovered online poker, see. So aside from a little pool party at D&D's place, I've been mostly inside, putting in time at the tables. I got a little obsessed for a few days and couldn't talk about anything else.

Gina's back from GenCon where she saw lots of old friends and no doubt made a few new ones too. She cooked a wonderful dinner for me and Lori and Luisa. Vegan nut loaf and a carrot salad, followed by orange-spiced chocolate. Mmmmmm. After dinner Kory came over with a game he bought at GenCon, called That's Life. Good game, but very frustrating for Gina I think. In an abstract way that's a lot like life when you think about it.

G: Wednesday I left for GenCon. Jacob drove me, Chris, Kory, and Kristin Matherly to Indianapolis, Indiana. It took 12 hours to get there, but we had fun on the ride. We took an accidental detour over the top of Pittsburg, and stopped in Columbus to eat at an Ethiopian Restaurant there that Jacob Kory and Chris had eaten at during Origins. So all that added a bit to the length of the trip.

I spent my time at the Why Did The Chicken...? booth and a little bit walking around. At the booth I would try to get people to try the game or and I'd also join in playing. The first day I decided to try to generate some attention by putting some itty bitty chickens up my nose in front of some people waiting in a line to get some autographs. I trotted over and announced, "Hey everybody, I'm going to put these chickens up my nose!" They I saw a head peering around the crowd at me that I recognized. "Keith?" I said, and ran over to see Mr. Baker. I haven't seen the Bakers in years. He told me Ellen would be along soon. Later I also heard that Lee Moyer was at the con, and spent some time one evening talking with him. Mostly he told me all about Portland and made me want to visit.

I also hung around with Russell (Rabbit Coordinator for Looney Labs) and got to read the Games magazine article about the Looneys that mentions John twice.

I was really surprised to see my friend Christian show up at the booth one day. I guess I remember him talking about liking games, but I didn't know he was that into them. We hung out a little too.

The ride back was uncomfortable since Jacob drove all afternoon and night, and I wasn't able to sleep in the very upright seat in back. Around 1am, after going through a tunnel, we were completely stopped in a long line of traffic from an accident up ahead. We amused ourselves for a while by getting out of the car, walking around, enjoying the mountain air. After a while we saw we were near a turn around (with a no u-turn sign) and checked with the atlas and Kristin's gps navigator and found an alternate route was not too far behind us. We felt extremely lucky to have been right near the turn around, surrounded as we were by huge semis.

We lost a lot of time, had to take some winding roads, and got to Jacob's a little less than 11 hours after we started out from GenCon. I've been sleepy a lot since.
