A Visit and a Volcano
G:
On Thursday Lori's son Jonathan came in for a short visit. He works for
Jet Blue so he can just jaunt up for a day if he feels like it, but he
has to make the arduous trip from Dulles to a nearby metro stop. We
went to dinner at Noodles and played some games at the Loons. He went
back to Florida the next day. It was good to see him for that little
time anyway. And John got to meet him.
Saturday Jenny came over and we watched a movie. Later, after she left,
Kory, Lori and John playtested a Kory game. Later still, more folks
came over: Renata, Dave Chalker, and Jacob. Then all the guys left for
a poker game, Renata went home, and Lori went to bed. I stayed up
watching dvds.
Sunday Lori and I went to that Thrift Store in Laurel that we missed a
few weeks ago. They had JUST changed the day that everything is half
price from Sunday to Monday, so we missed out on that but got a
few things anyway. John went to help Dave move some more
things out of his house, including a really big hot tub.
On Tuesday I went to Kings
Dominion with Stacy and Chrissi. We had a great time! The park was
not very crowded so we got to ride everything we wanted to with fairly
short waits. Of course the best roller coaster in the park (and one of
my all time favorites), Volcano
the Blast Coaster, had a longer wait than any of the others, but it was
short enough that we went 3 times during the day. Even more amazing was
the short wait for the Hypersonic
XLC, which we waited over 2 hours for the year it opened. Later
years we hadn't bothered waiting because the line was still that long.
I had noticed it didn't seem to be running for most of the day, and we
were nearby the first time I saw it go, so we got in line and only
waited about 20 or 30 minutes. It is a freaky thing to ride and even
just to watch. It looks like something sped up on film. It goes from 0
to 80mph in 1.8 seconds. It was fun to watch people's faces as they
were launched. It's a really short ride, a short distance and then
straight up 165 feet and down again, then back 'round to the station.
From launch to station is 20 seconds.
I also enjoyed a new ride— Tomb
Raider Firefall. Still, the food there leaves a lot to be
desired. They offer, almost exclusively, hot dogs, hamburgers,
pizza, etc., all greasy junk food and candy stuff that is not what you
want to eat on a very hot day. We managed with a last rate salad,
french fries, and snacks I brought. But besides the disappointing food,
we had a marvelous time.
