 Chowing Down in Chanty Town

G: Some nice people are moving away from Greenbelt, to NY. We went to Katie and Renny's (and Lilian and Elias) going away party on Saturday at Matt and Mimi's house. Us three residents of Chez Ginohn were the first to arrive. I made a nut loaf that turned out to have needed more time in the oven but was still pretty good. Veggie dogs and burgers plus marinated tofu were grilled, on a separate grill from the corpses. Katie always makes extremely delicious food. Simple sesame peanut noodles she made were my favorite dish there. There were lots of kids running around and lots of nice folks who I don't see enough. It poured down rain shortly before we left. Chris came down from Philly that evening.

J: I went on a big hunt on Saturday morning, just me and my plastic grocery bag. The weather was hot and steamy, the woods felt like a rain forest—complete with sounds of approaching thunder—during the whole hike. The mosquitoes stuck to my skin and drowned in my sweat. I hiked for almost an hour before finding some mushroom tracks. Initially I was looking for oyster mushrooms but I switched to chanterelles after seeing a few babies and strays. Most of mushroom hunting has to do with knowing the favorite habitat and season of each common variety. Occasionally the weather or the mushrooms themselves will drop hints, then it's just a matter of knowing where most of them live and what they like to grow on or near. Once I knew that I was hunting for chanties it only took another hour searching through chanty town to find the mother load. I picked a bag full, brought them home and cooked them all in a big iron pan with basil, yum. I ate a lot of them then put the rest in the fridge for later.

Sadly, later never came. Chris accidentally took them when he left to go back to Pennsyltucky on Monday, thinking the plastic container held his leftover noodle dish he had eaten in DC. He called me later to apologize, and also to add that the mushrooms were out-of-this-world delicious. I was glad he enjoyed them, but it wasn't a fair trade. I couldn't eat his hand-made noodle dish because it had chicken corpses in it. Oh well, I'm hoping to find more chanterelles in the woods soon.

On Sunday night Renee had a birthday party for herself and Gina. I ate a lot of really good food, met some people and had fun watching Izolda, Gina, Maurwyn (sp?), Lori, and Jeff as they rotated positions and "danced" to Dance Dance Revolution. Later when no one was watching Rich and I tried sitting on the mats and hitting the pads with our hands, which worked as well for me as using my feet (that is, not at all). It's an exhausting game and I'm as out of shape as I've ever been. I left the party early to get some sleep before work the next day. Gina and Lori stayed and played a big game of Celebrities.

On Wikipedia there's an excellent page about the late, great Jimmy Doohan, AKA Scotty. I saw him give a talk once at NASA, with a lot of laughs and a great question and answer period at the end. He came off as very confident, charming, with some humility as well. He was truly a renaissance man and a very likable fellow, and so say all of us. I'll miss him and I didn't even know him.
