A Week Without Gina
J: Gina cleaned
the house and left for Florida on Saturday, and I've been so busy
trashing the place that I'm behind schedule. So this is going to be a
short news brief, sorry. I'm also behind on additions to the Graveyard and a "third age" to
my re:ligion pages. Sorry.
Not to mention updates to Gina's pottery
gallery and the non-existent origami pages. Sorry.
Yes, we are very busy with house stuff. Long story short— Gina's sister
Lori is moving in with us! Gina went to Florida to help Lori pack
things, store things, and (later this week) drive back here with some
things. I'm trying to turn the "guest room"—which was previously a
"game room" and later morphed into a "big closet"—into Lori's new
bedroom. This involves pulling stuff out of the room and finding other
places for the stuff to go, pulling stuff out of those places, and
repeat. The house is a wreck; lots of piles of stuff and furniture
everywhere waiting to be moved to their rightful spots.
Lori's tired of Florida; she's going to check out Greenbelt for a
while. We're hoping she likes it and stays. Always good to have family
close by.
Meanwhile I've been thinking that if I had a gazillion dollars I'd put
together a band that toured the world and became famous for its live
performances of the Beatles' Revolution
#9. It would have to be a huge
band, I think, with a really big light show and lots of costumes.
And there's a lily in our yard that is about as big as your head. I
keep thinking it's going to start saying "feed me" or somesuch...
I finally paid up on a bet I lost to our friend Ronda. Over a year ago
I bet her she wouldn't be able to quit smoking for more than a couple
months, or something like that. She hasn't smoked a cigarette in over a
year. I owed her rock climbing lessons and dinner. On Sunday I took her
to Carderock
and showed her the ropes. She learned fast, and climbed Kindergarten,
the Nose, and Barnacle Face. I taught her how to belay, and she
successfully belayed me on a couple climbs, including the X, which I
fell off of once (Ronda anchored me nicely) and then completed! I was
impressed with Ronda's natural abilities (this was after all her first
technical climbing experience) and doubly surprised that I was
able—after such a long climbing hiatus—to complete a tricky 5.7 route.
I don't have many muscles left, so it was all mind power. It was a nice
day and the rock was good to us; we were both sorry Gina couldn't be
there. After climbing we went to dinner at the Vegetable Garden.
Leo and Lucy took me to dinner tonight, at the nearby Thai place,
Siri's
Chef Secret. I had a yummy yellow coconut curry.
For the upcoming 4th, I now present the lyrics to Laurie Anderson's Hiawatha. Happy Independence!
By the shores of Gitche Gumee
By the shining Big-Sea-Water
Downward through the evening twilight
In the days that are forgotten
From the land of sky blue waters
And I said: Hello Operator
Get me Memphis Tennessee
And she said: I know who you're tryin'
To call darlin' and he's not home
He's been away
But you can hear him on the airwaves
He’s howlin' at the moon
Yeah this is your country station
And honey this next one's for you
And all along the highways
And under the big western sky
They're singing ooo oooooo
They're singing wild blue
And way out in the prairie
And up in the high chaparral
They hear a voice it says: Good evening
This is captain midnight speaking
And I've got a song for you
Goes something like this:
Star light, star bright
We're gonna hang some new stars in the heavens tonight
They're gonna circle by day
They're gonna fly by night
We're going sky high
Yoo hoo hooo
Yah youu hooo
Ooo hoooooooooooo
So good night ladies
And good night gentlemen
Keep those cards and letters coming
And please don't call again
Geronimo and little Nancy
Marilyn and John F dancing
Uncle took the message
And it's written on the wall
These are pictures of the houses
Shining on the midnight moonlight
While the king sings love me tender
And all along the watchtowers
And under the big western sky
They're singing Yoo hoooo
They're singing wild blue
And way way up there, bursting in air
Red rockets, bright red glare
From the land of sky blue waters
Sent by freedom's sons and daughters
We're singing oo hoooooooo
And dark behind it rose the forest
Rose the black and gloomy pine trees
Rose the firs with cones upon them
And bright before it beat the water
Beat the clear and sunny water
Beat the shining big-sea-water
