Maeryland Faeryland Festival Mestival
J:
This news is a
day late, but at least it's not a dollar short.
Look! Some guy
we don't know who lives in the Netherlands painted a picture of me as a
clown, sitting inside a race car! Wild!
Hello John,
I hope you
don't mind I used your picture for one of my watercolours.
Best wishes,
Theun
Karelse, Amsterdam.
On Thursday Rizolda had avocados to use up, so they invited us over for
sushi served on the new sushi plates and accessories, some of which
they got as a gift from Gina and Petra. That was delicious. Then we all
headed over to the GHI (that's our cooperative, Greenbelt Homes Inc.)
annual meeting. It went on and on. We left before it got interesting,
we heard.
Last Friday
night I went to John Marketon's bachelor party in DC while
Gina helped friends set up a faery festival in Upper Marlboro. I knew
it would be an interesting evening after I sat down at a table in a
Thai restaurant with Marketon and a couple of his friends, and I
noticed a pretty centerpiece at the table— purple orchids in a vase.
"Hey," I said, leaning in for a better look. "Orchids! Those are nice."
The guy, name of Ken, across the
table gave a surprised sour look,
and then said something to Marketon along the lines of "What was that
about?"
Marketon responded by shrugging and saying, "John's weird."
Hey, I'll admit that I'm weird in many ways.
Who isn't? But I'm weird because I like flowers? Give me a break. As
the evening rolled
on I got the distinct impression that John's bach-party friends were
very careful when they spoke, possibly because they didn't want to seem
too abnormal or unmanly. I'm glad most of my friends can say whatever
they like around me, and vice-versa, too. (At least I think that's the
case. I'll have to test out my theory now.) Regardless, I had a good
time at the bachelor party, in both an amused and an anthropological
sense.
G: I went with
Dorian to the Faerie Festival site and we set stuff up for some hours.
Then we got cold, wet, and lazy and went home. We met back up at the
New Deal Cafe for a party for Ronda's graduation. She's officially a
Master! We met lots of Ronda's relatives and saw lots of friends. It
was fun.
J: On Saturday
Gina and I went to the Maeryland Faeryland Festival Mestival (not its
real name). First we stood for 45 minutes in a food line, which wasn't
so bad because we could see the stage from the line, and the weather
was gorgeous. After eating we perused the shopping area and visited a
very pretty part of the woods that was called a faery garden. Then I
played dij with drummers and belly dancers, and a lot of other people
joined in.
There were some great faery costumes, and I enjoyed people-watching and
seeing little children running around together in the fields with their
faery wings attached. Gina, as a faery named "Pixy", wore
butterfly-style wings that she made out of wire hangers and a large
silky scarf. I, as a faery named "Drip-stingle", wore droopy faery
wings made of bubble wrap, and told other faeries that my wings hadn't
dried yet.
G: It
was a beautiful day. We saw lots of friends, and missed some too. I
got the sleepys in the afternoon. I've been getting those lately. Hrm.
J: This was the
first faery fest put on in that area (a big 4-H club llama farm) and it
worked out fine. I heard that 1,500 people attended that day and only
one person showed up at the first-aid booth, and that was for a little
thing— a cut toe, maybe; needed a band-aid. We closed the place down
with drumming and my amplified dij from the stage area. Lots of
percussion instruments were brought out for the kids and they had a
great time making lots of noise.
Later that night Gina and I started a big campfire and we celebrated a
successful festival with some of the faery fest crew. Our friend Cathy
poured me two biiiig cups of faery juice (I'm a sucker for straight
Oban scotch whiskey), and I got, um, smashed. The rest is a bit of a
blur but I definitely had a good time.
I spent most of the next day relaxing and talking with Gina, Chris,
Kory, and Leo about anything we wanted to without feeling cobbled by
social mores. We also playtested a Kory-designed board game. Good stuff.
Gina made yummy soup on Sunday and yummy curry on Monday. On Tuesday
she taught me more clay skills. I love Gina. She's a great friend.
Also on Tuesday we saw the latest Star Wars movie with
Chris, the Looneys, Luisa, Janet, TVTom, and Rizolda.
On Wednesday Christian filled my brain with more Java/SQL/XML stuff. I
lent him a dijeridu to practice with; I think he's hooked.
My Dad finally got to watch Head, one of my all-time favorite movies.
He wrote a really good HMR for it that rhymes, even!

Should
stick to TV.
I guess he didn't like it. Good review, though.
Gina and I have caught two baby snakes, one each. We don't know what
kind they are; we let them go in the garden. They're brown and cute.
