A Wedding Weekend
J:
This weekend was mostly taken up by activities in and around Rich and
Izolda's wedding, which turned out to be quite the extravaganza! On
Thursday night while I visited the Looneys', Gina went to Izolda's
bachelorette party and had a great time, from what I heard. On Friday
we attended the rehearsal and accompanying dinner at Rich's parents'
place. Rizolda gave us bags of presents— chocolate, juggling balls,
liqueur, and handmade rice pillows! Nice.
The wedding on Saturday was big and quirky, held at the old millhouse
in Adelphi. They had a crazy neo-pagan style ceremony with lots of
participants, including Gina and me who "welcomed fire". We dressed in
red and black and while Gina read something aloud, I set off a secret
igniter in my hand which produced a ball of flame. Then I played my
didgeridu while she read some more stuff. Other people welcomed water,
air, earth, above, below, the moon, the god and goddess, etc. Rich and
Izolda gave very sweet, touching vows and did some other wacky ritual
thingies. People in the crowd read short quotes regarding love and
marriage. I'm recording all of this out of order, by the way, and I'm
leaving lots of stuff out. It was a really long ceremony, approaching
the length of some Kooky Katholic weddings I've been to. Then, at the
end, Izolda yelled "Let's eat!"
I'm proud to say that I was first in line for food. They had an amazing
reception with tons of food, drink, and a huge talent show (Gina was
MC!) with many talented players, singers, jugglers, and dancers. Then
we drank and danced some more and I drank a lot. (Free beer.) I set off
more fireworks from my hand and burned my pinky. Then I gave Gina the
fire prop so I wouldn't do something really stupid with it. I played
dij some more and it sounded really good after drinking. Then Chort—who
is used to running pirate feasts and directing drunken pirates—got me
to help carry big things to a truck and our car. Needless to say, Gina
drove us home.
The next day I woke up bright and shiny and took a full hatchback of
empty bottles to the recycling depot. Then Gina, Chris and I went to
Rizolda's for the post-wedding pre-prandial brunch. Today they're off
to Greece. Those two really know how to celebrate! Congrats on your new
marriage, Rizolda!
G:
Right. So first there was the Bachlorette party. Friends of the male
variety who shall remain nameless, unless Izolda reveals them on her LJ
or something, did a little strip tease (to the undies) at DnA's place.
Izolda LOVED that. Then all the gals went over to Meskerem in Adam's
Morgan for Ethiopian food. We had a fabulous feast. We visited an ice
cream parlor, and a sex shop, then went dancing at club Heaven. It was
all good, clean fun.
On Friday before the rehearsal dinner some of the gals met up for
pedicures and /or manicures in Laurel. Manicures are wasted on me, I do
pottery. But my toes are awfully cute right now. Too bad that the
weather has kept them under wraps mostly since then. Rich's parents
(Rilla and Nelson) provided a wonderful feast, I especially liked the
Chinese restaurant string beans. Must get them more often!
Instead of going into details about the wedding day, I'll wait for the
official web site to go up, and we'll link to it. I'll just say I
enjoyed it more than I thought I would, had a great time, ate great
food (and scored lots of leftovers), danced up a storm, and had a lot
of fun MCing the open mic (I was pleasantly surprised by the welcome I
got from the crowd when introduced!). All the performances were
awesome! Rich and Izolda have been very grateful for the help they've
been given, but it was all
pretty much fun, and they gave a
whole lot back. Happy married life, you guys!
