Between Booda and His Food
J: Just got back from Alfredo's Dia de la Candelaria
party where he served very delicious tamales and other Mexican dishes,
along with tequila and beer. Before that I was working hard most of the
day at my sister Meg's house, helping her family pack their stuff into
a big truck. They're moving to Kansas. I'm beat.
Last weekend we had a little video party at our house, with about ten friends. We showed Peaceable Kingdom, about the Farm Sanctuary
in New York that Gina interned at for a summer many years ago. The
documentary brought tears to many eyes. Later we watched a short video
advertising a children's course at Tom Brown's tracking school, which our neighbor Joey occasionally teaches at.
Other stuff happened this week, but I'm too tired to write much.
My precious doggy Booda got into a serious snarling match with me a few
nights ago. We were on a walk and he found something to eat and I tried
to take it out of his mouth and he got pretty vicious, snarling,
growling, and snapping at me. I put him in a sit. He ended up staring
me down for over a minute, which feels like a real long time when your
getting the stare-down from an angry dog. Both of us growled at each
other and neither one of us blinked, and I was seriously worried that
he'd go for my neck, he looked so mad. Finally he gave the submission
signal by very purposefully looking
away, and I said something like "OK, lets go." He immediately wagged
his tail and we walked back home. I am once again in charge. Still, the
whole episode shook me up a bit. I think residual pain from his surgery
has made him testy lately. I can't blame him too much for his attitude;
dogs occasionally have to test the alpha spot, especially when food is
involved, and to his credit he did find the food first, so technically
it was his. We're buddies again though— he's back to nosing me hello
when he comes in from the yard, and wagging his tail and smiling when I
come home from work.
