Shorter Hair and Longer Nights

J: I've been baptized into the world of no barbershops. Gina cut my hair! on Sunday I cleaned and oiled the electric shears—last used on Booda—and attached the largest spacer (half inch). When Gina came home I handed her the shears and let her do her worst (which wasn't all that bad, really). That's fifteen bucks saved toward our new computer; a hundred and fifty if I get Gina to cut it all year. She had fun pausing a couple times so we could laugh at my latest look. Thanks G!

Chris, Kory and I tested more Chicken variants this weekend, and playtested one of Kory's best unpublished games yet. Can't wait until it's on the store shelves. I'm guessing it should cost a little more than a haircut... but worth every penny. Kory and Chris spent much of the weekend demonstrating Why Did The Chicken to people at local game shows.

G: I had a huge weekend! We had our monthly party, so I was getting ready for that along with the Festival of Lights Craft Show last week. I was busy finishing up some pots and packing stuff up to be hauled down to the Festival, held in the gym of the Community Center. We had a great party that went really late, and I got up when I could, to go down to sell pottery. I worked until 5pm, with some breaks for shopping, and I also did a wheel demo, which attracted a large crowd. After the show was over for the day I attended the exhibitor's dinner (Progresso Lentil soup, yay.) But anyway, I went to the New Deal and met up with John and Chris and Kory and Jenny. We hung out there for a while talking about what to do that night. I decided I really wanted to go to the last night of Artomatic, since I really liked it the first night and really wanted to go back. John finally decided to stay home and be tired and grumpy with Chris and Kory, and Jenny and I went. We met up with a pottery student and new friend of mine, Amy, and walked around. I think between the two trips there I saw almost all of it, but not quite. We ran into Thofer (and Ann) and he showed us his piece. We saw Gary Kaplan, he was drumming with the Rhythm Workers. We saw lots of incredible art, and some not so incredible. We even saw most of a short film. The place was really hopping in the Cathedral area with belly and fire dancing.

We had a few of the beers they offered (Natural Light, Miller High Life, and Icehouse), and that helped promote a silly, fun time, for me anyway. As it got later Jenny decided to hang out and watch the belly dancers while Amy and I went in search of better drinks. Along the way I ushered her into an exhibit I'd seen the first time. In the middle of the room was a bed, so I lounged on it and Amy started looking through a magazine. Suddenly she held up a page with a picture and said, "Who does this look like?" Incredulously, I said, "Me! I've never seen anyone who I thought looked like me before, except my sister." Amy ripped the page out and tried to fool people into thinking I was part of the exhibit by lying the picture next to my head on the bed. But there weren't enough people around to fool.

We were making our way back to where we left Jenny when we paused to talk with a friend of Amy's. While we were standing there, the fire alarm went off. I guess our immediate thoughts were that someone had set it off accidentally or as a prank; we made no move to leave, but into the next room to get farther from the noise. After a while the music stopped and they announced that we should all proceed to the nearest exit.  Everyone filed out but there was no panic. Jenny was right outside waiting for us. The Rhythm Workers started jamming but we decided it was time to get back to the metro. They were about to let everyone back in, so I guess it was a false alarm.

So I got home really late and got up at 10 to go sell pottery again. Our group had our best year yet! We had lots of great pottery and I sold almost all of my vases. Kristin Matherly came by and bought more than anyone else. Thanks, Kristin! I made John come down and help us pack up and haul everything upstairs. Thanks, John!

Well, John was too tired to come with me but I went out again Sunday night, to a birthday party for Petra at her parents house in DC. Rizolda and I carpooled with Janet. We met some of Petra's relatives along with her parents, Elke and Jeff, and Liza was there as well. Renee and Alex showed up a little later.

As soon as we came in we were offered champagne, and started in soon on the amazing, fancy, and beautiful spread put out by Elke. Everything was delicious. We were given a tour of the house, which was decorated quite whimsically with murals painted by Elke and Petra. Later came the three lovely cakes, with sparklers in place of candles. Elke had spent who know how long making a candy cage with candied violets on it to put over one of the cakes. She is truly a very talented woman. As is Petra.

After all the eating wound down and all the other relatives left, we managed to organize a game of Celebrities. Petra's parents played as one person teamed with Izolda, and I was paired with Liza. We were both quite pleased with the game, after each apologizing to the other in advance for what we figured would be a poor performance. We even came in first place in the first round. We ended up tied for 3rd (with Izolda and the Mayers), but still had a great time.

I've finished up my classes for the session, and new classes will start the first week of January. In the meantime, I'll take my yearly trip to my parents house for Xmash, and John is coming with me this time! He's coming back sooner than me so he doesn't miss too much work.
