Arto-Motion-Matic-Fest
J:
On Veterans' Day (BTW, Thanks, Veterans!) I actually went to work for a
couple hours, then headed home to get some bicycles ready for a
much-needed ride to Franklin's. This time Ginohn rode with Jenny,
Dorian, Paul, and Gary, and met Amethyst and Alfredo there. Once we
were safely anchored atop Franklin's high pub chairs, we ate and drank
a lot, maybe too much, but
it's hard to fight tradition. I had a very good maple porter and an
IPA. By the time we were ready to leave the pub, Jenny, Gina, and I
were running a bit late, so we skipped going home (thanks for feeding
Booda, Gary) and rode straight to the movies to see Motorcycle
Diaries with Alfredo. We only
missed the first minute or so, I think. After the movie we rode home
and drove a car to the Loonies' to play games.
On Friday (BTW, Happy Birthday Bruce!) after work Gina and I drove into
DC to attend Artomatic's
opening night. Artomatic is
almost like an entire art museum created by a flash mob. The opening
was very crowded with people, art, and enthusiasm, all inside a huge
old building. The building itself had lots of character and style, and
was a great place to host the show— I couldn't tell what it was before
an art museum, maybe an old hospital. It was impossible for us to see
every piece of art, so I guess we'll have to go back sometime. By the
time we returned to Greenbelt I was exhausted, but the night was not
yet done. We went to the New Deal Café to see Folk Nouveau
finish up its last set (which got everybody dancing and clapping), then
most of the café and the rest of the band went to DnA's for an
impromptu party. It included lots of drumming, didging, dancing, and
drinking, and lasted until about four in the morning. I guess after
playing the dij I got my second wind back.
On Saturday Gina found some shiitake mushrooms growing on our logs that
we plugged last year. We propped the logs up against the shed and put
the shrooms in the fridge for later. In the afternoon we went to
Baltimore with Izolda, Izolda's friend Peter, Janet, and Janet's friend
Becky. We ate at a café we've been to before, called Liquid
Earth. They have great sandwiches, coffee, and juice smoothies.
After dinner we drove to the last Motionfest
ever (boo hoo), where we met up with Rich and witnessed amazing feats
of clowning, jugglery, and acrobatics.
On Sunday (which was Dani's birthday, so Happy Belated Birthday, Dani!)
Gina and
I went shopping, which we hardly ever do together because I'm a bit
shop-phobic. I did alright, though. Gina found some nice cheap hiking
boots and we looked at lots of furniture. Then we drove to the Folk Art
Café in Bowie to see Kiva
play some really nice songs. After that a good portion of the audience
and the band went to the DuClaw "brew
pub" (in quotes because they don't really brew beer on the premises)
for ale and food. I had another porter. It was pretty good.
Monday night I cooked up the shiitake mushrumps (big as portabella!)
with some vegan sausage. Gina and I had succulent shiitake sausage
sammitches.
Here's a tombstone submitted by Dan Gurwitz (thanks Dan!) last month
that I missed. Couldn't put it in the Graveyard; those spaces are
reserved for people. But I thought Dan had a good fantasy tombstone
that should be posted somewhere. Dan
included extra instructions: "Please remove this tombstone should the
unthinkable occur and Bush get a second chance to continue his mission
to solidify his place as the worst leader in human history!!" Too bad— the
Bush presidency and its accompanying theocracy, like a great
spreading mob of zombies, remains very
much undead. "Brains! Brains! We
need brains!" I actually
think the tombstone is more apropos with the extended term:
