A
Holiday for John!
J:
Librafest this
year was, as always, a three-ringed-circus event. Gina and I spent part
of Friday and Saturday helping DNA set up for the party. Gina improved
on last year's Nookie Nook. I put up one of the large tarp tents, the
one leading to the Den of Iniquity.
I had no idea what to wear to the party. The invite suggested to "come
as your fantasy self," but I drew a blank. When I told Dorian I had no
idea what sort of costume to wear, he said, "Just paint a blue dot on
your head and come to the party." So I did. Well, Gina did. She put her
makeup on me, some blue eyeshadow on my "third eye" and black eyeliner
around my "regular" eyes. Then I just wore comfortable clothes. I
decided my fantasy self was Relaxed.
Gina curled
her hair, wore a really cute short dress and elf ears, and painted her
face in blue and gold designs. Pretty! She dressed Chris Welsh as a
waiter from Hooters. He was a big hit, of course.
We had a great time. Chris and Izolda bartendered, and Gina served
mixed drinks from trays. I didn't work much but I handled the water
supply when it ran out. Lots of people brought instruments; there was a
lot of music and dancing. And friends, too! Here's a picture of me with
Robin, whom I first met over 18 years ago. My dad showed up too! He
seemed to have a good time. I had a lot of good conversations,
laughter, and dancing.
We
left the party after 5:00 in the morning. Chris and Alex (Alison's
brother) stayed at our house. The next day we took Booda on a hike
through the woods, where Alex inadvertently found over five pounds of
hen of the woods mushroom. When we got back home we cooked some of it
in olive oil with garlic and basil. Delicious! I made a gravy out of
the juices and served the hen on toast.
Later we went over to DNA's place to help clean up from the party.
Dorian reminded me that there was a dinner for members of the advisory
committees, presented by the mayor's counsel. Since I am on the Forest
Preserve Task Force, Gina and I were invited, and we were an hour late
for a free dinner.
Luckily the Mayor's staff was late, too. When we got there, salad was
waiting, and dinner hadn't been served yet. We sat at a table with
other FPTF members, ate dinner and watched as five- and ten-year awards
were handed out to various members. We also ran into Jennifer and
Atticus, our neighbors who bought our last house. They've since moved
out of Greenbelt, and gave us directions to their place. They also told
us about a new vegetarian restaurant near them called Great
Sage. Sounds good.
On Monday I didn't have to go to work because our government for some
reason celebrates the greedy deeds of the Dread Pirate Columbus, who
"discovered" this land that was already populated by millions of
people, and threatened and killed them for their gold. But I digress.
Monday was also my birthday, so that's the holiday I celebrated. I'm
autistic about birthdays, including my own (I've missed it completely
at least twice in my life), but this year I learned a useful lesson: On
your birthday, if you use the word "birthday" as an adjective, you can
get away with a lot of stuff. I had a lot of friendly birthday
reminders before and during Monday so I used the birthday word a lot. I
made myself a triple-decker birthday pancake stack with maple syrup for
my birthday breakfast. Chris made birthday coffee. Then Gina had to go
to work, so Chris, Booda and I went on a long birthday hike (over three
hours!) through my birthday woods, where I collected lots of birthday
mushrooms. Then I went on a birthday run. Later I met Chris, Gina, and
Kory at the movies (we saw Napoleon Dynamite
again), and had a birthday dinner after the movie. All in all I had a
very pleasant birthday holiday.
