Deer
Hamlet
J:
On Friday, I
called into work well —
"Hello, I'm well today, so
I'm not coming into work" — and helped
Gina prepare for our monthly party. OK, I helped a little, but I was
distracted. Around noon, while walking with Booda in the woods, we came
across a dead deer. The poor thing looked like it had run into the
fence near the path and broke its neck. Hopefully its death was quick.
Later that afternoon I went back with our neighbor Joey and learned how
to skin, gut, and quarter a deer. I've been eating deer meat this week,
which may (for some readers) seem counter to my "vegetarianism".
I'm
well within my personal ethics, though. I don't want to eat most
animals that are killed by people, especially animals that have been
held in captivity and treated horribly while they are alive, as most
factory farms and abattoirs in America treat them. The unfortunate deer
that I found had died as the result of an accident, and aside from
living in a highly populated area (with too many humans and deer), it probably lived a
life relatively free from torture.
Our 1st Friday Party went well, and we went to bed around 4:00 in the
morning. My brother Karl called around then, twice from Taiwan, to let
me know he and his kids (students) had created fire the old fashioned
way, using the fire bow and
spindle method.
The next day Gina woke up around 8:00 in the morning to find out that
her craft sale was postponed
because of rain. We both stayed up, though, and cleaned up a little of
the party's wreckage. I also set myself to the task of cutting and
storing deer meat.
Later that evening we went with Rich and Izolda to see Kevin play
Hamlet in Willy Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Gina ran two video cameras; I helped a little too. I liked the way
Hamlet's mom was portrayed. In the last scene she says her lines in
such a way that tells the audience she knows she's drinking the poison.
Cool. The sets and costumes mixed many ages, from Shakespeare's time to
ours. Kevin did a wonderful job, but the acoustics in that place (old
Baltimore warehouse basement) didn't help carry his voice well. I loved
his Yorick speech, though.
On Sunday Gina sold pottery at the craft sale
outside of the New
Deal
Café. Inside the café, an anonymous art installation
began its first week of Shock and Awe. Anon had plastered the walls
with many pictures of George Bush, faces covered with anti-war and
anti-Bush slogans. I should take pictures before some crazy repub burns
the place down. Update: Here they
are:

On Monday night Gina and I watched some Mr. Show (season four) episodes
with Kory. That show didn't last long enough, dammit.
On Tuesday while walking back from lunch with my boss, I found three
different kinds of mushrumps, all edible, mostly right around the
building where I work. Later that afternnoon I met (at various times)
Gina, Dad, Catherine, Rich, and Petra at the Beijing restaurant for
dinner. Petra likes Head! The Monkees'
movie, that is... She's the only other person I know who would put it
in her top ten list. Which reminds me: at First Friday I discovered
Janet likes Dhalgren!
Today I ran in
the GSFC 2-mile Fun Run. Last time I ran it in about 20 minutes, so
this time I was trying to beat 19. I surprised myself ran it in under
17 minutes! 16:20 I think. That was much faster than I expected, so
next time I'm in trouble. It's a very hilly course.
