Happy Labor Day to You...
J:
Chris is fine, he got kicked out of
the hospital last Friday. He's continuing to battle his entitilitus.
What a trooper.
First Friday was a
lot of fun. I spent part of the night at another party: Barchan and
Susi's wedding party at Trog's place. Congrats to both of you! I was
wondering if I'd be able to stay awake all night, but lots of tea with
a wee whiskey in it helped me close the place down. Greg fell asleep by
the fire, which was kind of cute. I put a blanket over him and left a
jar of water next to him. Greg and water were gone the next day, so I
guess he's alright or both he and the water evaporated.
Herman's Hermits played at
Greenbelt's Labor Day festival. I'm a new fan! They were great; a
really tight band with a very funny lead singer, Peter Noone, who also still has
a nice singing voice. They sang a lot of Hermit songs and other 60's
stuff, and Noone cracked lots of jokes in between songs. He was quite
charismatic and seemed to be a genuinely nice guy.
I celebrated the
Labor Day weekend by working on Sunday, but only for a little while.
Gina worked some too.
We watched the Greenbelt Labor Day
Parade, from the inside! On Monday we got out of bed extra
early. Gina went down to the lake to help decorate a flatbed truck—our
"float"—with cloth and signs, while I walked Booda. Then I walked down
to the lake and met Gina and the rest of the Greenbelt Drummers and
Dancers Circle in their place in line. We all took our seats on the
float— the dancers, including Gina, Amethyst, Kerry, and Zareena stood
in the front truck bed while the drummers sat in the flatbed trailer.
When the parade began to move, we started drumming and dancing, and
didn't stop. The dancers threw candy to our audience. We got lots of
cheers and waves, and we won 70 bucks for second place in the community
group category! There were over 85 groups but I don't know how many of
those were in the community category. We gave Amethyst $25 for supplies
and donated the rest to the New Deal Café. After the parade the
driver of the truck let us stay on board while he drove it fairly fast
through Greenbelt, back to the parking lot at the lake.
Peter Tork and his band played
for the umteenth time at our Labor Day festival. We danced a lot to
their songs, but mostly to the Monkees songs. His band is really good,
and they looked like they were having fun, but not as much fun as the
Hermits. Peter Tork plays a mean guitar.
Cough cough. I've
been coughing for over a week now. It's some kind of bronchitis, lots
of coughing and phlegm. I had to stop running, but the cough hasn't
sent me to bed yet. I'm contemplating going to the doctor for
antibiotics before Gina and I leave for the Canaries.
Passport woes— Gina
found out that her passport is no good, technically. You're not
supposed to leave the country with a passport that expires less than
six months away, and hers expires in February. We called and faxed the
Spanish Embassy, but they essentially said, "not our problem, good
luck." Gina's going downtown to DC Friday, the day before we leave, to renew
her passport. If that doesn't work we'll, uh... wing it.
Six Feet Under is an interesting
show. We've been watching it on DVD, which is quickly becoming my
favorite channel. DVDs are like Tivo with no commercials to skip, and
they're often free for us because we have lots of friends who buy them
and pass them around.
We'll be gone for
two weeks starting Saturday, one week in the Canaries for work, and
another week in Spain to play. Adios!
