Lots of Laffs at Origins
J:
Gina and I spent much of this week at the Origins game convention in
Columbus Ohio. We had a great time helping Jake and Kory at the Why
Did the Chicken booth. Playing Kory's party game day after day was
physically fatiguing, but I never got tired of the game itself. At
times my jaw hurt from laughing so much.
A BIG Congratulations to Kory for winning a Calliope for Zendo as
the best abstract board game of the year! Zendo is another game I'll
never tire of.
I competed in two tournaments this year — Homeworlds and RAMbots —
and did pretty well. I should have played better in the Homeworlds
tournament, but I had a brain fart and forgot how the red action
worked! In the RAMbots match, I easily made it into the finals, and
then got squashed like a little squishy robot.
I also helped run the Zendo and Icehouse
tournaments, which were won by Dan Isaac and Eric Zuckerman— Eric
hyperventilated when he discovered his win, almost as much as Liam did
two years ago. These Icehouse tournaments are beginning to make me
worry about people's safety.
Other fun moments include seeing the many friends and familiar faces we
haven't seen since last year; crashing a Cthulu party for a few minutes
of thrash dancing; shopping and listening to music at ComFest; cheering the gigantic Gay
Pride Parade; and occasional quick drinks with Chris, Rich, Gina,
and John Buckley. We found a seedy bar right next to the more upscale
brew pub across the street. The cheaper bar had Guinness and Columbus
ales on tap, was not crowded, with a Happy Hour from 3:00 to 9:00 pm!
You know you're in the right bar when the bartender is drinking, too.
Just got back from NASA visitor center where we watched mission control
as Cassini
performed orbital insert at Saturn, seven years after launch. Cool.
