These Boots Were Made For Walkabout
J:
Friday - We had
planned a bike ride to Franklin's brew pub, but a hell of a storm
started up, so we (Joey, Renatta, Gina, me, and Paul) decided to
carpool instead. This turned out to be a mistake. I'm pretty sure we
could have made it to Franklin's faster on bikes. Our route in the car
diverted many times to avoid flooded roads, bad accidents, closed
railroad track crossings, and closed bridges. It took over an hour of
horrendous driving to get to the pub (usually takes 45 minutes on
bikes), and we almost missed last call for happy hour— Joey and Paul
jumped out of the car in a traffic jam about two blocks before
Franklin's and ran to get our orders in. Remember, always ride your
bicycles to Franklin's, it's quicker! During our strange journey we saw
a transformer get struck by lightning, about a hundred feet away. It
exploded!
Saturday
- Gina and I drove to Sweet
Briar College in Virginia to meet
up with her brother Grant, for a going away party. Grant's moving to
Colorado. Lots of his friends showed up for the party, including Jim,
who came all the way from Iowa with a ton of band equipment, and Tracy,
the drummer, who came down from Baltimore. We met them all in downtown
Charlottesville for a beer, then they left to set up the party while
Gina
and I had dinner and strolled around a bit. Gina bought a very sexy
outfit from Nepal, and she wore it to the party.
Gina and I opened as White Diaper with some improvised drum & Dij
for Grant's band,
Stochastic Spam, then Jim and Tracy helped out; we sounded fine, and
the small crowd cheered. Then Stochastic Spam
played a lot of really good songs all night, mostly rockabilly, old
rock, and some eighties stuff. Grant invited me to play dij during These Boots Were Made for Walkin' (...made
for walkabout?) and I actually made it through the whole song without
my lips turning to rubber. I thought it sounded great, especially since
we hadn't rehearsed. The crowd loved it, it seemed. That's the first
time I ever played with a rock band in front of an audience.
One
of Grant's friends, Paige, sang a couple songs, and joined the band for
a few more. There was another guy who played harmonica in one song. We
had a great time, dancing and singing along with the band. Gina
videotaped a lot of the concert, and sang Weird Al's Smells Like Nirvana. with some
great vocal backups from Paige and Jim.
Sunday - We
stayed the night at Lisa's, another good friend of Grant (she is a
wonderful host with a fantastic house), and the next day we helped the
band break down the set and pack the equipment into Jim's truck. Then
Grant took us on a hike through the woods at Sweet Briar. Really nice
woods, with lots of streams, chanterelles, and ticks. Grant showed us
an old slave cemetery. By the end of the day Gina and I had found
over 20 ticks on each other.
On the way home Gina and I stopped at a random exit to find a restroom
and restaurant, and we found a really good Indian restaurant.
Tuesday - I'm sitting here, trying
to get the website done, while a bunch of our friends (Kory, Chris,
Leo, Izolda, Neha, Luisa, and Jun) sit around chatting. It's quite a
party. Later I have to pack; tomorrow Gina and I are off to Origins for a few days. Ciao!
