Chickenshroom Sammitches Every Day

J: Thursday - Took off part of the day to help Thom install fan belts on his Ferret, which had broken down on Beaver Dam Road, near our house. It took about three hours and lots of help from John Marketon and a bunch of generous machine shop guys from BARC, but we finally got the belts on, and Thom successfully started his toy. I went home to clean up and get ready for a Geezer ride to Franklin's.

We had a nice ride, pretty fast because there were fewer of us (me, Joey, Paul, Dorian, and Jack) and I was in the lead, pushing for an early happy hour. From Franklin's I rode directly to Luisa's place for a little campfire party in honor of her friend Trista who just got her PhD. Luisa had bought a small keg of Franklin's ale, so I had a couple more pints, started her fire, and helped grill and eat some veggie burgers. Then I went home to walk Boo and wait for Gina to return from her vacation.

Gina got home around 12:30, a 6½ hour drive with some of that stuck in two-lanes-of-I-95-closed traffic. Exhausted, we both went to bed after mostly emptying the car of Gina's things.

Friday - On the way to work I passed Thom's tank again, it had made it about a mile from its previous location. I paged Thom and he called me back. This time his little Ferret had busted its radiator, so he would have to tow it home, on a big flatbed (it weighs almost four tons). Poor little Ferret.

I had to go to a big company meeting, which turned out to be very constructive, because on the way to the meeting I spied a huge chicken mushroom just inside the woods near the NASA gate. On the way back Georgi, who was driving, stopped and help me pick off pieces of the chicken. We filled a grocery bag, so I've been eating a lot of chickenshrooms this week.

After work Gina and I got the house ready, just in time, for our monthly First Friday party. True to form, our campfire burned brightly, despite the rain. I think our fires have been through
rain or snow every First Friday for the last six months. It's becoming a tradition. I got very soaked but had a great time. I got to bed after 5:30 the next morning.

Saturday - We woke up around 9:00 that morning. Gina went to town center to display pottery at an arts festival, but came home soon after— the pottery sale was aborted due to rain. Meanwhile I stayed home and cleaned up a little. The fire pit was still dry despite the rain; I had forgotten to cover it the night before. After walking Boo, Gina and I went back to town center to the New Deal for coffee and snacks, and to listen to some of the festival's bands. Then we walked across the square to the movie theater and met up with Kory and Luisa to watch The Ladykillers. After the movie we hung around the New Deal until closing then bopped over to Mike Cooney's place for a night of krazy dancing, complete with DJ Matt. A lot of the Greenbelt Gang showed up, along with a few out-of-towners, like Chris Welsh. Gina and I stayed up too late again.

Sunday - Gina woke up early again to sell pottery. I turned up to hang around and keep her company for a while, and listened to some of Jaqui's band, Radio Mime. They're good! Jaqui, who plays congas, was obviously having a lot of fun.

I had to leave early, though, for an origami date with Dad. We discussed and sweated over various little emergent versions of his paper airplane, which I hope to put up on this site someday, along with other origami madness (Sorry this is taking so long, origami peeps). I spent some spare time this week working out and memorizing "reference points" (creases, corners, and edges to refer to while folding the airplane) so I can describe its manufacture to advanced folders.

I returned to Greenbelt to
listen to more bands and help with pottery sales while Gina attended a brush making workshop. When she returned, we broke the pottery table down (Kory helped, thanks Kory!), then loitered a bit around the square with friends. I went back home with Kory for a quick doggy jaunt, then we met Dorian, Luisa, Ginger, and Gina back at Luisa's place, and watched Dorian get all tied up by Ginger (hee hee), then it's all a blur, 'cause I was very sleepy.

Monday - Rode my bicycle to work, worked, then rode back home for a little nap and chores. Chris, Alfredo, Jun, Margit, & Luisa showed up later to watch our
wedding video. I also fed them chickenshroom sammitches, and they liked them a lot. I hadn't seen the wedding video in a long time— it was somewhat embarrassing, I must say. Kory showed up right after the video ended, lucky Kory. Gina played her beach vacation video and I tried to watch that while playing backgammon, which is quite difficult. The video's highlights: a house tour, elusive dolphins, Rich Potter, who is very funny on video, quick crabs scuttling across the beach, kites, and parasailing. Not shown: boogie boarding.

Tuesday - allergies most of the day yeck. Then home, Stacy walked Boo so I rested on the couch and listened to the Davids (Bowie and Byrne). Then Gina came back from the farm (picking up and picking the vegetables), and she and I got a ride from Mi Ae to Rí Rá for Qui Ni (Translation: Mi Ae Kim is a friend,
Rí Rá is a bar, and Qui Ni means Quiz Night, which I just made up but it looked better that way in the sentence). Team Trayler Trash, whose members were Ginohn, Rich, Mi Ae, Kory, Molly, Christy, and Eric, came in 5th out of about 20 teams! Not bad. I had lots of stressful fun, and too many curried french fries. The League of Gentlemen won again this week. Cheaters. I should sic Brick on them.

Wednesday - Another Wednesday. I'm just working on website stuff, and eating a hell of a lot of chickenshrooms.

G: I had a really nice time in the Outer Banks of NC, but don't worry, I didn't get one of those OBX (stands for obnoxious) bumper stickers. I did overestimate my ability to tan (being half Italian), since I haven't been on the beach so much in many, many years. I ended up getting a bit of a burn, not too bad really, and John's been having fun peeling the skin off my back lately while admonishing me about it. But even those who took major precautions ended up with some sunburn as well, so maybe it wasn't entirely stupidity on my part. Oh, and that tan through bathing suit didn't seem to work, I mean, I ended up with some major tan /burn lines.

I had a lot of fun, but perhaps the most fun was Boogie Boarding. This is when you have a styrofoam type board, about 3 feet long, and you ride in on a wave on your belly and hanging on to the board. It wasn't always easy to hit the wave just right, but when you did, it was really neat. It felt like you were going much faster than you were, and usually the foam of the wave was bubbling underneath you and carrying you along with it.

Parasailing was great too, but not free like Boogie Boarding. It wasn't the least bit scary, really fun to take off and land, and very peaceful way up there in the sky.
