Cicada Season is Here! (Yum)
J: Another
synopsis of the week! (I really dig synopsisizing, synopsization — uh,
synapsing? No. Anyhow...)
Thursday
-
Bicycled with seven fellow Geezers (Including Chris Welsh, who stayed
with us a whole week) to Franklin's.
Gina, who is
actually just a Geezer fetus, had to work that night so she didn't ride
with us. We had a
good time at the bar; all very sweaty and thirsty, but in fine spirits.
On the way home we saw a herd of about 10 deer crossing a stream! Then
we stopped at 94th
Aero Squadron for another pint outside around a nice fire, and then
rode on. By then it was dark, and only some of us had lights. Lost one
rider (Jack) so we backtracked to look for him, then detoured to his
house to make sure he made it home. We all applauded when he answered
the door, then rode on through the night. A fox stared at us from the
side of the road and Paul made the mistake of staring back, which I
guess you shouldn't do to a fox. Paul's bike, about ten feet in front
of mine, suddenly turned sideways and Paul performed a magnificent
Buster Keaton belly flop in the road. Sounded like a sack of potatoes.
But he wasn't hurt (much) so we continued back to my house for more
beer and light conversation. Joey gathered a few 17-year cicadas from
our back yard. I ate one. It was tasty, sort of like a mild Camembert
cheese, with legs.
Friday
- Went to
Petra's for an enjoyable wedding shower for Renee and Alex. Good Food
and wine, and conversation. Renee was pretty icked out by my cicada
descriptions. I told her that cicadas are like little shrimps with
wings, and they peel themselves! I don't think that changed her mind.
Gina MC'd a funny Newlywed game for the soon-to-be newlyweds. We all
played the I
Never game, then I fell asleep (I was fairly fatigued). When we got
home that night Lucy, Leo, Chris, and Kory had just finished having
some heated discussion; it seemed perhaps a bit too heated, I don't
know.
Saturday - While
Gina attended a ceramics workshop, Chris, Kory, and I met at the New Deal Cafe to discuss some
hardcore philosophy. The phrase "I'm gonna get meta-evil on your ass"
was born, I liked that one. Then we went home and played High Society until hunger
set in. To take care of that we played Food Hitler.
I won, so I took them to the Ten
Ren Tea House, for Asian food, bubble
tea (well, I had an iced mocha bubble coffee), and
a teleported-to-Asia atmosphere. After that we went home and watched a
bunch of episodes of Kids in
the Hall.
G: After the
clay workshop I picked up Izolda and we went to Target to get a few
last minute supplies for Renee's bachelorette party. We went to her
house and picked her up, then proceeded to Franklin's where we met up
with Janet and Paula. We had scrumptious meals and then had a lot of
fun in the general store attached to the restaurant. I picked up a
dozen more "nose chickens," and some vegan chocolate. From there we
went to Seabrook Skating Rink, where some of us were transported back
to our youth. I used to go roller skating as much as possible while in
middle school, and a bit into high school as well. Little girls eagerly
took our hands looking for someone to skate with and help them around.
The rental skates there are pretty old and worn out, but they worked
well enough. After going twice around the rink, I decided I wanted to
get some roller blades so I could skate more. I love it! Janet says she
has some regular roller skates that might fit me that I could have,
too. Yay!
Petra showed up too late to skate, having spent too much time at home
looking for her pair of wheels. She found them the other day and says
we must go again. So we went back to Renee's for a sleepover. We drank
wine, ate goodies of various sorts, and watched some dvds of The Vagina
Monologues, just a few parts, and some Coupling episodes. We all took
the 100 question purity test, and all of us scored around the
mid-sixties, except Izolda, who scored 87 or so. We wrote down on a big
sheet of paper the funny things that were said. We stayed up until 3:30
in the morning (though Paula went home earlier), and I got up around 9
to get to the second day of the clay workshop. I was pretty exhausted
by the end of it, but I went to the movie with the fellas.
J: Sunday - In the afternoon I went to
the usual 3rd Sunday drum jam at town center. I played the didge for a
while, and the drummers played some good stuff interspersed with long
chaotic pauses where the drummers couldn't seem to agree on the
program. More drummers showed up, and then a talented bellydancer
inspired some little four year old girls to imitate her dancing, with
leafy branches. That was cute. I left early and went to the Ibrahim
movie with Gina, Kory, and Chris. Then Chris, Kory, and I played more
High Society, and then Gina joined us for another game of Food Hitler—
Kory won and took us to the Merrakesh Ethiopian
Restaurant in Adams Morgan.
Monday - More
cicadas with Joey. He froze a bunch and sauteed
them with garlic and
Old Bay seasoning. Delicious. This crazy bug diet has caused friends to
ask strange
questions like, "Hey, aren't you vegan?" And then I give even stranger
answers like, "Yeah, well sort of. I mean, I eat cicadas." It's kind of
hard not to, when it's practically impossible to keep from stepping on
them when I walk outside.
