Lost and Found
G: On Friday we
had a lovely party with a really sweet little campfire out back. It was
especially nice compared to the very smoky one in the woods a few weeks
back. John stayed up with Gary and the fire (talking philosophy) till
almost six in the morning.
Bob Pyle came to our party and brought his new CD that was just
finished after 4 years of work, called Apples and Oranges. He gave us a
copy. It's all in old timey banjo style, but the songs are modern
folk/protest type songs promoting vegetarianism. He says it will be
available at Amazon.com soon. I like the cd, but John likes it more.
Saturday we went to Cayuga-con, Jake's birthday (and gaming) party.
When we arrived folks were chowing down on artichokes. Turns out they
were an appetizer, but after eating most of one I was full since I'd
had a late lunch.
After everyone finished dinner many of us settled in to play Werewolf.
For the first time in a very long time, I was a werewolf, and even
managed to fool John for a round (then I went along with Rich's choice
to maul him, bad move perhaps). In the next round the seer, Lisa, knew
I was guilty, and managed to get me lynched, but Kory thought I was
innocent. I was very surprised that Rich won by himself as the other
werewolf! After I was out of the game I played some ping pong with
Izolda and Marlene and Kevin. Somewhere in there was a game of
Shaufenster (Klunker), then Why Did the Chicken, and lastly and late at
night, Cluzzle. I didn't win anything all night.
Dave Chalker had bought a new car that day, a Scion
xB, and we checked it out as we were leaving. It was pretty cool,
but I think it's funny looking, so ugly it's almost "cute". John liked
it and suggested it might be a good choice for our next car - but it's
too early to decide that.
We also found out Kristin Matherly has somewhat recently traded in her
Honda Civic for a hybrid one. Yay!
On Sunday we brought Kory with us over to Alfredo's to watch the
Concert for George Harrison. Alfredo made us a wonderful dinner of stir
fried tofu, mushrooms and peppers, bok choy and snow peas, and green
beans with sesame oil. With blueberry fig bars for dessert. What a guy!
The DVD was really cool. It started with amazing Indian music written
by Ravi Shankar. His daughter played the sitar magically. Her fingers
flew! After a long solo (well, with a drum accompaniment), she then
directed a huge orchestra of Indian and Western musicians. The variety
was impressive. The second half of the concert opened with bits by
Monty Python, then went on to showcase many well known musicians,
including Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynn, Joe Brown, Tom Petty, and of course,
Ringo and Paul. Occasionally accompanying the many guitars on stage,
Dhani Harrison, George's son, did his best to keep up with the rest. He
looked uncannily like George.
On Monday John lost his driver's license while working out of the
office at NIST. That night we dragged Kory to see Hellboy. He
didn't really want to see it, said he was tired of comic book action
movies. I trusted the good reviews and thought it would be fun. But...
Tuesday I got a lot done around the house, well, at least compared to
usual. It was so nice out. I re-potted some house plants among other
things. John's license was found and returned to him.
We didn't have time to bike there with the Geezers, but when John got
home we went to Franklin's where Dorian was celebrating his 44th
birthday, and also Paul's who is getting older next week. There were a
lot of Greenbelters there, like Luisa, freshly back from SF the day
before, and I mostly talked with her about her trip. I had to leave
early to go teach a class, but John stayed on and drove Amethyst home
in her car - she'd had a few.
When I got back from class everyone was hanging out at Dorian's so I
went over there and watched a little bit of some documentary of Bob
Dylan (when he was young and in his heyday).
J: I've been
having an especially exhausting week. I'm conducting experiments at NIST
with "lasers", so I have to drive way over to Gaithersburg every day,
through nasty traffic. Today I didn't get back home until 8:00pm. On
top of that, some bureaucrat way back in the odditeen hundreds
decided to throw daylight saving time
in my face. Thanks, whoever you are. To add insult to injury I lost my
driver's license ID this week, which only reminded me how much control
those bureaucrats have over my life and sanity. I very nearly went nuts
as I played hypothetical losing-the-license scenarios in my head all
day until they devolved into really weird plots. (e.g. I enter the lab
in some strange mental fugue state, pull my license out of my pocket
and drop it into the trash, signifying that I no longer want to be
myself, maybe, or perhaps I just don't want to drive.) Someone found it
for me though, so I am myself again.
Oh, Gina told you that already.
