What Did We Do On
Friday?
J: My mind is
drawing a blank; I can't remember what happened last Friday. Oh well.
On Saturday I spent the day getting mixed signals from my family about
where to meet other family members, who were in town for a special
Sunday reunion in honor of my late Grandfather and Grandmother Kendall,
on my Mom's side. To make matters worse I sent my own mixed signals to
Gina. While I wanted to do something
with Gina (we finally had some time off together), I
wasn't sure I wanted to drive all the way North or South to a Bro or
Sis house, to maybe see a few relatives, so I kept waiting to see if
most of the relatives would end up in one place. Meanwhile I neglected
to give Gina any details as the uncertain phone calls came in, so she
ended up putting other plans on hold while I waffled. I also forgot
about vague plans to do something with Gary Kaplan, and recklessly made
even more tentative plans to do something with Shaun and Mi Ae. At the
last minute most of the rels decided to go to my brother Bill's for a
steak dinner, so, feeling a sudden pang of hunger — but not for meat —
I quickly kidnapped Gina and went into DC with Shaun, Mi Ae, a friend
of theirs named Chris, and Kory. We ate at the Lebanese Taverna,
a very expensive place. Not sure we'll go back there again, but we all
had a good time. We sat outside, next to a nice DC city street,
chatting and eating too much. Then Gina and I came home and fell asleep.
G:
Kory saw someone walking down the street who he knows well from San
Jose while we were at dinner at the Lebanese Taverna. A small world
sighting. And for the life of me, I can't remember what I did Friday
night, but I think I went out with some people, and John stayed home.
Does anyone remember?
J: On Sunday Gina
and I went to our grandparents' memorial at the Trolley Stop restaurant
in Ellicott
City. We had the whole 2nd floor to ourselves. There were more than
30 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Esther and
Wallace Kendall there. Our unklings wrestled and ran around, certainly
making loud thump thump noises for the patrons downstairs. Gina and I
ate too much salad and pasta. My Uncle Bill said some really nice
things about both of his parents, then my Mom and others joined in with
their memories.
After lunch we all went outside to look at the river and climb on some
old stone walls. Some of the kids started play-sword-fighting with some
reed stalks growing by the river. Brother Thom and I really got into it
then; we both used to fence a
lot, back in the day. I found that even with a stick, I reverted to my
old epee stance, while Thom fought foil. I switched to foil for his
benefit, he had to fight left handed because his right elbow is messed
up. Despite my brother Kit's alarms, we didn't poke our eyes out. I was
surprised that Thom did so well, he got a couple touches on me, and
left handed too! Lotsa nostalgia there.
After fencing and climbing, Gina and I went up the road to peruse an
antiques mall. From there we went to my Uncle Bill and Aunt Judy's
house, where I tried to have meaningful conversations with various familia while the pasta I ate
turned my brain into mush. Pasta makes me sleepy. Gina played with the
unklings a lot.
On Monday after dinner Gina and I went to the New Deal Cafe for Tofutti
Banana Shakes, which is slowly becoming a Monday night tradition. Of
course we ran into several friends there and had some good conversation
with Margit and Jun. Then we invited them over to our house to watch
The Gamers movie. Margit's daughter Severina came over, too. She shook
her head a lot in dismay, while Jun kept saying, "this is very painful
to watch." Even so, I think a little part of them liked watching it. I
know I did...
On Tuesday night Thom called me with a morass of computer problems, so
Stacy and I paid a house call. His 'puter was swimming in spyware and
pop-up ads. We battled until around ten o'clock, deleting programs from
the startup file and fiddling with regedit. I installed Zone
Alarm and Spybot
S&D on his machine, to heighten the security a bit. It's doing
OK, now.
Belated Note: My
brother Frank and his wife Shawn just gave birth to a
baby boy on St. Patty's Day. Mother, Father, and little F. Scott are
doing well.
G: (April 1st)
It finally came to me at 2am: I went to the Baltimore Aquarium with
Joe, Billy, and Leo Naab on Friday. I left in the afternoon to meet
them for the $5 after 5pm special, the last of the (off) season. I'd
never been there before. We stayed almost until closing at 9pm. I
thought John was going to get together with some people and play games,
but he just ended up sitting around the house.
I'm not very happy in general about animals kept in captivity,
especially dolphins. But I was often awed at the beauty, strangeness,
and variety of life they had there. After watching the sharks for
a while - who looked terrifying with round, unmoving eyes and mouths
that stayed a bit open revealing a jagged array of knife-like teeth - I saw one
yawn, which was also terrifying but gave it a bit more personality.
