A Very New Year
G:
I had a very nice and
relaxing time in Florida. I got in on Sunday the 21st and hung around
with Mom, Dad, and my sister Lori. The following Tuesday was pretty
exciting. It's never really been a secret, but not many people know
that Lori had a baby when she was young which was given up for
adoption. A few weeks ago her son found her, and she's been spending a
lot of time with him ever since. They are both just thrilled to have
each other and he came to my parent's house to meet more of his
relatives. His name is Jonathan Sutton. He grew up just a few miles
from our old family home. Here are some pictures of him,
his girlfriend Shayla, and Lori. We sat around and chatted all day, and
he
already possessed quite a bit of knowledge about our family. Our
website was helpful to him finding Lori, and for that we are glad. I'm
really happy for Lori and Jonathan, and to have a new 19 year old
nephew!
We
had reservations at a restaurant for 5pm, but as the
time approached we thought we'd wait around a little longer to see if
Grant would make it from South Carolina
on time. As 5 got closer, we decided to move the reservation to 6. But
at five minutes after 5 Grant called from the restaurant and was there.
Right on time!
I didn't go many places while visiting there, but I watched a bunch of
movies, and worked on a few art projects. Lori and I repaired a room
screen divider (that had been clawed up by the cat who belongs to the
neighbors but lives in my parent's house) by cutting up a pretty book
with oriental pictures and gluing them over the clawed parts. Last
year I had done a mural in pencil on my Mom's bedroom wall of a little blue heron
and a great white egret, and this year I painted it as a
present for Mom.
For
Xmash everyone got some pottery, Lori got our old stereo speakers
(we got a new home theater system) and a fused glass pendant, Grant got
Maggie's
organic socks (so did John), and Dad got two books; Bushwhacked by Molly Ivins,
and Lies and the Lying Liars Who
Tell Them by Al Franken. Dad finished
the Franken book and I brought it home with me so I could finish it. I
thought it was excellent.
We had a vegan Xmash dinner, except for the ice cream some people had.
I made my now traditional chestnuts and rice from the Vegetarian Times
cookbook, with less trouble than in years past shelling and skinning
the chestnuts. Grant made a nut loaf, and we also had cous-cous and
pasta. I made two of the vegan pecan pies and everyone liked them.
On Saturday Jonathan's adoptive parents visited us. They often take
weekend vacations nearby and stopped over to meet us all. His father,
Bob, is a pastor, and a very nice, gregarious fellow. His mother, Jan,
was very sweet, and had a great smile. Mom discovered they had a friend
in common; someone she used to teach with is a member of their
congregation.
I
got a surprise present from John before I left, a new color Palm
pilot called Zire 71
which is also a digital camera and an mp3 player! I took the 2 pictures
at the top
of Jonathan and Shayla with it (and many more as well). It's really
cool.
J: We went to Trog and
Maren's Eve Eve party the night before last. Had a lot of fun making
hats out of Xmash wrapping paper. Last night we went to a New Year's
Eve party down the road at 19Q. We played that
party game where you get a celebrity's name on a sticker on your back,
and to figure out the name you have to ask a different yes/no question
to other party goers (one question per person). I was Martha Stewart.
Later Mi Ae had everyone write fortunes for people and place them in a
paper bag. Then one by one people drew random fortunes, which I would
then read out loud in an ominous voice. Kristen picked out a fortune
that began with her name! That was quite a coinkidink. |
