Pumpkin
Pumpkin Halloweenie
G: On Thursday we went
to the New Deal Cafe to help carve pumpkins for the Pumpkin Walk, put
on every year by the Committee to Save the Green Belt. Last year was
the
first year we went on it, and we just loved it. So we decided to help
out this year. I carved my typical pumpkin, a kind of evil face.
Then we went over to the Looneys', and I carved a pumpkin for their
front porch. I carved one that Alison had grown - a naked seeded
pumpkin. The seeds didn't have the hard shell, they were just the green
insides. I waited not too patiently for them to be roasted, and the
naked seeds turned out absolutely delicious. The regular ones were good
too. I hope Alison grows them again next year.
J: On Friday night,
after giving out some candy to about ten or fifteen kids, we took the
rest of the bowl over to the New Deal Cafe, where Dan Hart, dressed as Dead Elvis,
put on a fantastic show. As well as playing many Elvis tunes, often
with a Dead Elvis voice (making some of the "Ooooos" more spooky), he
also played a lot of our favorite Hart originals, including two of my
favorite Xmash songs -- Santa God
and Lobotomy for Christmas.
He's a very clever and funny lyricist; I really think some of his songs
rival Tom Lehrer's stuff.
Anyhow, after listening to Dan's gig, overdosing on our candy and
witnessing a very strange costume contest (in which Gina won something
for her elf outfit and the invisible man stole a bottle of wine), Terri
Rutledge and Craig Tooley gave us a ride up to Baltimore, along with
Paul Downs and Susan Barnett. First we went to a nightclub, The Vault, to see ily AIMY. It turned out we were too
late for them, but Terri got us into the place for free, I think via a
guest list, we had a few drinks and watched another band, Velvetene, play for a while.
Next we went to Fell's Point
to check out the Halloween crowds. There were thousands of people in
costumes, cramming the streets, and overflowing out of the nearby pubs.
It was a big mob that was protesting nothing and going nowhere,
celebrating our favorite holiday. Most everyone was in a good mood, and
about half the crowd were plastered. We did see an altercation between
a ketchup and mustard bottle.
G: The Mustard guy was
walking fast and yelling angrily with the Ketchup girl running after
him, yelling back, confused and upset. Earlier than that, we saw a
couple of Oompa Loompas,
one of them did cartwheels in the street and crashed into the curb.
We headed off to join a party at The Carriage House.
We knew Luisa, her mother, Mi Ae, and Dorian would be there, but they
were about to leave when we arrived. Dorian and Mi Ae decided to stay
and Susan decided to ride home with Luisa. We danced and hung around
for a couple of hours and then went home. I think we went to bed around
4:30am.
On
Saturday we got a slow start, then went to Northway fields to help set
up for the Pumpkin walk. John and I spread straw on the path and lit a
bunch of candles and jack-o-lanterns, and found Stacy arriving on our
way home to eat, walk the dog, and dress up to scare the kiddies. By
the time we did all that, we'd missed most of the walk, but we still
had fun trying to creep people out. The setup was really cool. It's a
dark path, with spooky jack-o-lanterns, scary noises coming from the
woods, and creepy characters wandering about, including the Goat
Man.
As the Pumpkin Walk ended, John and I stayed to hang around a little
fire. We stayed for hours eating candy, drinking stuff, and chatting
with Paul, Dorian, Gary, Ellen, and Brian. Others were hanging out too
but drifted away as the night wore on. We left around
1:30am.
