Makeup, Foosball and
Dancing
G: On
Friday night I went over to Alex and Renee's for a makeup party. I
brought Izolda, and Rich, Janet, Petra, and Liza showed up. We ordered
a bunch of Chinese food, and the women got into painting our own and
each others faces. The guys went downstairs to play pinball or darts.
Renee got a book for her birthday a few years ago that has lots of
pictures of women (and a couple of men), some famous, some not, and how
the makeup they were wearing was applied. I have a lot of pictures of
everyone on my camcorder but I haven't downloaded them to the computer
yet.
Saturday
Dorian picked me up and we went to Glen Echo for
some swing dancing. Dorian hadn't really done it before, but I've been
dancing an average of less than once a month or so, but for many years.
I'd never been to the ballroom
there and it had very recently been renovated to glorious splendifity.
We got there with plenty of time before the beginner lesson started. So
we checked out the place. It's huge and colorful and there were lots of
people there. We both danced with several other people for the lesson,
and Dorian picked it up better than I thought he would.
Jenny showed up some time later, and she had spotted Thofer (whom we
both later danced with)
and his girlfriend Ann.
We didn't realize it at first, but it turned out to be a special night.
It was the ballroom's 70th anniversary, so the band they had was a big
fancy one, and the fellow who had given the beginner lesson was part of
a lindy hop troupe from England who performed an amazing show to my
great delight.
I danced with at least a dozen different guys of all ages, and it's
really amazing how they can all be doing about the same thing, yet it's
completely different with each of them. We all had a great time and
hope to go back soon.
J: On
Saturday
while Gina was dancing I went out with Shaun, Mi Ae, Luisa, and Kory to
play foosball at a bar, after eating dinner at Tako
Grill, a Japanese restaurant. Shaun showed great expertise at the
game. Whoever's side he was on, that side won, over and over, even when
he played singly against two opponents.
G: Then
on Sunday we went to walk around Old Town Alexandria with Jenny. We
walked from her place right next to the Masonic Temple into town, and
looked for a restaurant along the way. For some reason, after not being
much interested in anything else we saw, we all suddenly agreed that
Austin Grill was good and went in there. It turned out not to be nearly
as good as the last time I ate at one in Bethesda, but passable. I
overate a bit and was uncomfortable for a while, but John and Jenny
complained of tummy trouble later on.
We stopped in some fun looking stores. Jenny wanted to check out Hats
in the Belfry, and we all tried on a bunch of Halloween wigs. Jenny
ended up buying one. Then we went to the Torpedo Factory, but we only
had about 15 minutes until it closed. We saw the free Dash About bus
and dashed for it, but it didn't leave for a few minutes. A bunch of
ladies got on, and a few minutes later, when I told Jenny to put on her
wig, they all started talking about how they had tried it on and a
bunch of the other wigs we had tried on as well.
Monday night we went to Luisa's for a little while so John could get
her computer back online. Then John took Kory to the airport. He's
going to Germany for the world's largest game convention in Essen. He's
going to try and sell some designs!
J: Last
week we saw the return of one of our rarest and tastiest wild mushroom
species, the
bearded tooth. A fine specimen returns to the same tree each year
in our woods. We've been noticing it for at least four years now, and
picking it for the last two years. This year we saw it again, and
decided to wait a few days for it to grow. On Tuesday I returned to the
tree only to find that someone else had picked the tooth. I've become
reticent with my wildcrafting knowledge. I was already finding it
difficult to readily educate others in the art, but now I may dive
deeper into secrecy. Unfortunately, at this point I feel like I may
have seeded a neighborhood trend that will only gather momentum.
