Walk Run Folk Fest

G: On Friday John surprised me with a Happy Bunny baby-doll shirt from this site. Happy Bunny says, "Hey you make me throw up a little." I had already gotten myself a sticker that is very similar but slightly different, where Happy Bunny says, "Hey you made me throw up a little." Happy Bunny says all sorts of cute things, like, "You smell like butt," and, "It's scary how dumb you are." I love Happy Bunny.

I wore the shirt at our monthly gathering and it was enjoyed by all. The weather was nice enough to have a little fire out back and we had a real swell party.

We saw lots of people in yellow shirts walking down our street the next day (Saturday), and found out they were doing the 50 mile walk-a-thon we'd been advertising on our site a while back, for MS. We didn't see anyone from Team Greykell, but people were walking by all morning and it would be hard to know when they'd come along. Alice wrote to say they raised more than their goal and thanks to everyone who helped out.

Jenny came by after attending a GHI pre-purchase informational seminar, since she is considering moving to Greenbelt. She and John went out to purchase stuff they call webbing (nylon straps for climbing) to hang the hammock she and Kory had given us for Xmash. We hung the hammock between two trees in our yard and enjoyed it briefly before heading to the New Deal Cafe where we ran into Kory, Kyle, Leo and Lucy. We talked about the weather, comparing California to here. It was nice out, like California, that day. Jenny had to get home after we ate and the rest of us hung out for a while.

I made our delicious veggie roast for my Pot Luck Pottery Teacher's Meeting (which
, at our party Friday, was being called a Hot Love Meeting a lot after someone mistakenly thought I said that). At Jessica's request, we've decided to try and make the trials and tribulations of making, teaching, and doing glazing easier for everyone by changing over to a new set of glazes; preparations and tests are being done this week and next to get this exciting new system going. Woo Hoo! In case you're wondering, classes start the week of the 21st, you can see a pdf of the schedule here. You have to page down to page 19. Take a beginning wheel class from me!

When I got home there was a message from John that he was with a bunch of friends at Pitchers, the hotel bar at the Marriot very close to us. I met him and Kory, Kyle, Shaun, Mi Ae, and Luisa there. It's an icky sports bar with much too expensive drinks and lots of people smoking, but they must have a remarkable ventilation system there as I hardly noticed any smoke smell even though people were smoking all around and very close to us. That's one thing they have going for them I guess.

We decided to rent a movie and meet up at our place. Everyone but John and I went to pick a movie, we went home and brushed the dog hair off the rug and brought down a bunch of mufraj pillows. John had previously gotten our TV working again by giving it a cleverly placed whack, so they picked out a movie on tape so we could all have room to watch it. We can't fit very many people around our computer which holds our dvd player. Anyway, Leo and Lucy came by in time for the movie, Raising Victor Vargas, so we had nine people plus Booda watching in the living room.

Sunday John and I went to the Takoma Park Folk Festival, and it was way more crowded than our living room. We didn't get there in time to see our friend Gary Kaplan drum with the Rythym Worker's Union, a drumming group, or a collection of folk singers do a Beatles tribute. We did see Jaqui MacMillan, who drummed with John sometimes in the Tempest, lead a large group of mostly kids in some very good drumming but much too loud. We skipped out before it was over to save our ears. We wandered around the craft show and rested in the shade until the next act I wanted to see was up: another group of folk singers who were doing "The funniest songs we know." Dan Hart, a great funny folk singer who I try to catch every time he comes to the New Deal Cafe (his next gig there is Halloween), was in the lineup and was clearly the funniest, but that is his specialty. He really appreciated it when we sang along to his song "Sex and Violence." My next favorite was Zoe Mulford, I almost bought her cd but decided to save my money for the time being.

That night, John was too worn out to go to the planned duck pin bowling outing. He's been suffering from a cold. I rode over with Shaun and Mi Ae, we met Kory, Kyle, Rich, and Izolda there. Duck pin bowling is fun! Wheee! After that we went to Platos. I shouldn't have ordered anything, I wasn't really hungry, but I had an eggplant sandwich, hold the cheese, and a side of vegetarian sausage. It was pretty good, but I was a bit too full. I fell asleep pretty easy though, and then I slept about 11 hours.

I did make it into the studio on Monday to help with the glaze preparations. A lot of work had already been done, but I helped cut extruded clay into test tiles, and made a test glaze. Then I did a bit of my own work.

Tuesday I met Luisa at the University of Maryland for lunch, and it was another lovely day so we hung out at "the mall" on campus for a while. After John got home from work, Rich called and wanted to go running. He has a cold too and wanted to run to help work it out. I decided to go along, even though I haven't gone running in over two years and haven't been doing
aerobics for a couple of months. I was surprised at how far we both got - we weren't going very fast but we made it from Plateau Place to almost all the way around the lake. I was really happy to try running again. I had given it up when I had some hip pain that the doc thought was bursitis. But it hadn't come back when I was doing aerobics so maybe I can run again too.

J: Today after work Gina, Booda and I went for a little hike through our wood that lasted over three hours. Mike Darzi and Paul Elliot wanted to scout out a future Sierra Club hike through Greenbelt and its woodlands, so Gina and I showed them some paths. My feet hurt by the end of the hike, and I think Booda was ready to come home. But we found some choice shrooms -- bearded tooth and cauliflower mushrooms.

After the hike Kory came over and decided to go with us into the woods again for a little late night camp fire with some of the Geezers and crew (Dorian, Paul, Luisa, Shaun, Gary, and Ellen). We had a good time chatting around the fire, drinking beers, tea, and cider, under a full moon. On the way back, by the light of the moon, Gina found yet another cauliflower mushroom! We just cooked it for later.
