22 JULY 2003 FORWARD >>

Birthday And Other Bashing

G: Wow - what a week. July has become quite the birthday month, between celebrating mine, Renee's, and Kristin's, there were a couple other people having birthdays, like Dale and Lisa Joy. Luisa's was a just a couple of weeks ago, and Ronda's is coming up too. Anybody else?

On Friday, Renee's birthday, we met up with her and Alex at Los Ponchos in College Park, and Rich, Izolda, and Janet showed up soon after. Kevin came too, after we were finished eating. Then we all went over to the duck pin bowling alley just down the street, where Izolda and Rich kicked everyone's ass. Rich is experienced, but it was only Izolda's second time so I guess she's just a natural. One of her many talents - another one is picking out gifts for friends!

Gina and BoodaOn Friday my sister Lori came back here after visiting friends and relatives up the east coast and in the Buffalo area and Ohio. Her beau Joe flew up to visit for the weekend.

On Saturday (my birthday) John and I went to Graymael and Amanda's wedding reception. They'd already gotten married a while back, honeymooned in Scotland, and were having a party at the Adelphi Mill. John and I got there right when it was starting and helped set up, but we had to leave before we wanted to so we could get to Philadelphia.

We drove up in two cars, Kevin and John in one, Lori, Joe and I in another. We got there a bit later than planned (always hard to get multiple people to leave a place on time), and missed out seeing the gallery where my old college pal Laurie Switzer works. She was waiting outside with Chris Welsh.

We had a nice dinner, and it was great to see Laurie again. We didn't really have enough time together, so we planned on going up there again and staying with her and Rob for a weekend during the Fringe Festival. Chris will be performing in some shows there.

Soon we headed over to the Mann Music Center to see Weird Al. The show was great, even though there were a handful of sound glitches. There wasn't much time afterward to hang with Al, but he did get me TWO shirts from the merchandise table. What a sweetie!

Renee moved dance night at her house to the 3rd Sunday to coincide with her birthday weekend, and John and I went to the pre-dance party. John left when we started the salsa lesson. I had a lot of fun learning how to salsa dance, and I learned to lead since there was a dearth of gents. John, Lori
and Stacy went to see Whale Rider that night.

On Monday, after Lori recovered from getting up early to take John to the airport with an extra long nap (during which I talked to her and tried to get her up and she spoke back to me several sentences, sometimes stopping midway, and didn't remember any of it later), we went to Value Village. I think Lori spent most of her entire vacation time shopping at thrift stores and garage sales. They don't have changing rooms there, so I was trying on jeans and shorts over my shorts, but I didn't think I could really tell if I would like the clothes that way, and I had on a very long shirt, so I just dropped my shorts and tried on jeans and shorts right in the aisle. I got two great pairs of jeans and a couple pairs of shorts.

That night Kory and I saw Whale Rider while Lori packed up, then we all went to the Silver Diner.
Lori left the next morning before I got up, she's finally on her way home to Florida.

Tonight I went to visit Jenny and she treated me to dinner at Bilbo Baggins in Old Town Alexandria. I had a Bali salad that was very good but a bit heavy on the candied mango. Then we went and saw Pirates of the Carribean, which was very good. You'll have to wait a couple of weeks for the Haiku, though.

John left for San Jose for work early on Monday. Lori took the responsibility of driving him to BWI, the day after she took Joe there, so that I could sleep. Thanks again, Lori. I'm going out there Friday so we can vacation together for another week. So there won't be a news update next week.
