A Week of Games

J: We're back from Origins, and I had a great time, aside from fighting a nasty cold the whole time I was there. I had a little fun with it though; I told people I was playing a LARP called SARS, and that I was winning.

I met up with many friends there, some of whom I only see about once a year. Nice people.

I don't feel like I played very many games, but I watched a lot, including an hilarious episode of Satan's Dice, a silly drinking game for very drunk worshipers of Old Nick. I participated in another drinking game, Drunken Master Zendo, which degraded quickly into just drinking sans game.

Apart from drinking I refereed a couple tournaments, including the annual Icehouse tournament which had exceptional players this year. I also taught a few games and playtested a few new games by other designers.

On Saturday a large Gay Pride parade passed right by the convention center, so I sat on the curb, ate my lunch and watched the floats and marchers go by. Later Gina and I sneaked out to Comfest, the Columbus Community Festival. Some people called it a hippie festival. Gina will tell you a little more about that. She bought a really pretty, quite unique necklace pendant there.

On Sunday we watched James Ernest's movie called The Man Between. Hmm, maybe I'll save any comments for a haiku review. After the movie I showed James the same game design I showed him last year, with some changes. He seemed less interested than last year, but made some good suggestions and lifted some printing constraints to the end product. Consequently I'm about to re-design the whole thing, most likely making it look and play not at all like it used to.

G:
I'd have to admit that perhaps my favorite part of the trip to Origins was what people were calling a Hippie Festival. 'Becca found it by accident and told us about it. The next day, after I finally woke up (and having a bit of John's cold, didn't feel much like being bubbly in the booth), John and I walked the couple of blocks to it. There were lots of food vendors, tie dye clothes, arts and crafts, bands, jewelry, and organizations. We split a Broccoli Burger and looked around a while but couldn't cover it all. Later I went back again with Alex and Renee and bought some jewelry and Guatemalan pants. Every year when we go to Columbus I find something else I like about it.

My other favorite part is seeing all the people I only see once a year there. The Looneys have an incredible group of Rabbits who are all a lot of fun to be around.

Last night (Monday) we went to Izolda's cd release party and performance. It was a fabulous affair, the music was great, there were sing-alongs, food, and lots of friends there. There are newspaper articles about the cd Sound the Deep Waters and Izolda here and here.
