Belly Dancing and Baby
Dodging
J: On Friday night Gina and I went to the
New Deal for a demonstration of belly dancing put on by Deborah Sterns
and about eight other dancers. The patrons packed the cafe, and the
dancers kept everyone clapping and cheering all evening. They danced
quite well. Each dancer had her own style and skills.
On Saturday, Sunday, and Monday I saw most of my little unklings, in
several family gatherings. Let's see if I can remember all my unklings'
names: Billy & Leo, Liam & Sean, May & Kimberly, Katerina,
another Sean (he's in Japan), and Erin & Emily.
Undoubtedly I've missed one, or at least misspelled a few. There are
also undoubtedly a few who haven't been born yet. Kids are very much
like potato chips for some people. You can't have just one. And they're
salty tasting and crunchy and go well with dip.
I also saw a few aunts, uncles, and cousins this weekend, and had fine
conversations with many of them. My Uncle Bill lent me a tuba mouthpiece
to buzz on, for didjeridu practice. A bunch of my siblings visited with
their families on Monday night; we showed them the house and garden,
such as it is. It was nice to discover that my cousin George likes many
of the same movies that I do, such as Mulholland Drive.
Welp, I've gotta cut it short this week. We're supposed to be getting
ready for Origins. To celebrate my three days of leave I came down with
a cold. Blah.
G: I also saw another dance show. Renee was
in a (mostly) tap show called "Beautiful Noise". Rich and Izolda picked
me up and we went to Friendship Heights for it. It was very enjoyable,
and I believe it was the first time I've ever seen professional tap
live. At least the first time since high school. And I've always really
liked tap. I even started to take a class once, when I was a kid, got
the shoes, but it fell through.
Afterward we went with Alex just down the street to a place called
Chadwicks. We got a table near where all the dancers were going to sit.
I had a really good veggie wrap with avocado. We played Pictionary on
the backs of the paper menus. Apparently, this restaurant prints up new,
changing menus every day. Renee showed up after we got our food and
joined us. We stayed for a long time chatting and having a good time.
This weekend was also another Bill
Van Guilder workshop at the pottery studio. He has lots of
neat tricks and techniques he shared with us. This time I took notes so
I wouldn't forget them. |
