More Tempests, and a Funeral

G: On Friday I went to see The Tempest (with John playing didge) and it was pretty fun. I had seen a bit of a 1979 movie at Dorian and Amethyst's so I kinda knew what was going on. The acting was good and there were a lot of funny scenes.

The next night my brother Grant flew in to BWI from New Mexico with a couple of his students, Marianna and Jenny, and they came to spend the night before heading down to Sweet Briar the next day. We went to the play and this time I helped out with the drumming since they were a little short. Then we went and ate at the New Deal and had some fun conversations with some of the local folk.

On Sunday John went to play in the play again,
I picked up Rich and Izolda and we went over to Renee and Alex's a bit early for a Lindy Hop lesson before dance night. I'd been led in Lindy a many times before, and it was neat to learn what I was really supposed to be doing.

Yesterday, Tuesday, I was late to a funeral for Stacy's mother Sophie, who died last Wednesday. I underestimated how long it would take me to get there, and arrived just as the service was wrapping up.  There was an open casket, so as everyone took their turn saying goodbye as they left, I also went up to take a look. It's only the second time I've seen a dead body, the first was when I was pretty young. Although the body looked very nice, it didn't really look like Sophie, and I had the distinct impression (as Stacy did, she told me when I walked and talked with her today) that this had very little to do with Sophie and we both find it strange that folks would keep the body around to look at - let alone preserve and bury in a fancy box preventing decomposition.

I thought I had time to go to the cemetary. I had seen one nearby on the way and somehow assumed we'd be going there. So I got into the funeral procession and off we went. Through Dundalk, onto the Baltimore beltway, off that onto a winding road. All along that winding road I kept thinking it had to be just around the next bend, but we just kept going and going and going. It was an hour since I had gotten in my car and I thought I was going to have to leave the procession and try to find my way when we finally arrived at the veteran's cemetary (where Stacy's father is buried). Then there was more waiting. When I could finally get to Stacy again I apologized that I had to leave. I got directions from the front office - thankfully I didn't have to travel back along the winding road and was able to get to a major highway almost right away. I got home with just enough time to change and eat something before going off to teach a class.

I saw Stacy today, she came by to walk Booda with me. She is holding up remarkably well, at least in my presence. But I think she
really is doing well.
