Beltane and All That
J:
This week I mostly slacked off, lazed about, and played my didgeridoo at
a couple campfires. I also played at Billy Shakespeare's Tempest at the Greenbelt Arts Center.,
on Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Coincidentally, Tim from Big Blow
and the Bushwackers played just across the parking lot, in a dance
performance of The
Lorax. So this year Greenbelt had two didge players pulling at the same
time, maybe next year there'll be four...
On Saturday Gina, Booda, and I went to Little Bennett Park to celebrate
Beltane with Izolda and about 15 other Greenbelters. We played drums and
didge around a large fire and danced around the maypole with everyone,
but then we left when the real hardcore ritual stuff (circles, chants,
and such) started. Gina and I have tried ritual before, but neither one
of us is very comfortable with it. I get the same weird feelings if I go
to mass at a church.
So instead we took a car ride. We found our way through a few miles of
backroads to the Naabs' house -- Joe, Meg, and their kids Billy and Leo.
They were preparing for their own campfire and we arrived just in time
for delicious coffee and s'mores, for me, that is. We saw their kittens,
ducklings, and chicks (cute!). Billy, who is just over three years old,
looked quite impressive when he raised a flaming pine branch into the
air and yelled, "Flaming death!"
After spending a couple hours with the Naabs we drove back to the park.
They had completed the ceremony, and were continuing with the all night
party. My brother Thom, who had stopped by earlier, brought his British Ferret
Scout car (it looks like a small tank) to the park. Dorian had all the
pagan hippy folk cluster around the Ferret for a picture, but I heard
the picture didn't come out. Just before we left I jumped the fire to
celebrate Spring. That felt good. I love that smell of smoke in my
clothes.
G: On Sunday while John didged at the
Tempest, I went with Izolda to meet Alex and Renee at Vegetable Garden.
Alex and Renee had never been there and seemed impressed with the faux
meat dishes. From there we all went to a dance recital at Montgomery
College. Renee was choreographer of a piece in it and had lots of free
tickets so Izolda and I were treated. I don't think I've seen a dance
recital anything like that since high school or something so it was a
nice treat. Izolda loved it so much she started talking about taking
modern dance classes. When I'm watching something like that I have a
hard time deciding whether to look at one person or couple or try to
take it all in with a wide view. The wide view thing doesn't seem to
work so I'd pick my favorite dancer in each piece and mostly watch them.
There were some very good dancers.
