Trying Out Some Drums
& Cars

J: Gina
caught my cold last Wednesday and it took her down for the count for
the next couple days.
On Saturday we drummed and didged at the start of the Greenbelt Crazy
Quilt Spring Music Festival, a free outdoor festival that features local
folk bands. After drumming in the opening of the festival (they
amplified my dij, it was very loud!) Gina and I left to submit ourselves
to a torture session at a nearby car dealership. We test-drove the
Toyota Echo, which was alright, and ran the gauntlet of eager sales
people: "What price will it take to get you to drive out of here with
one?" "No thanks, we're just looking" "No, really, how much?" "OK, a
dollar." Then we retreated back to the safety of Greenbelt -- more
bands like ILY AIMY (a couplet with goodharmonies),
our friend Izolda, and a young woman from Asheville named Brianna. I
bought a Brianna CD.
While the festival played on we walked into the Beijing restaurant and
had a humorous dinner with Kory, Jenny, Shaun, Mi Ae, Dave, and Luisa.
Dave invited us to his house, in town. We played twister and a really
big Balderdash game with 10 people (Dorian and Amethyst showed up) and
didn't get back till 2:00 AM or so.
On Sunday we continued the drum jam in downtown Greenbelt, with only
one call from an annoyed neighbor, then we went to Shaun and Mi Ae's
house to test drive their Prius hybrid car. Pretty interesting ride --
when you stop at an intersection or go downhill, sometimes the engine
turns off completely. After driving the car around and talking about it
with Shaun, I felt better about maybe buying one someday.
Yesterday
Michelle Isaac (I can never remember her married name; sorry John)
visited us while she's on the East Coast for work. We had dinner at Beijing again with her, Joe, Meg, and their kids, and
went for a walk with Booda. Then we sat around chatting while Billy and
Leo watched The Iron Giant for the twentieth time. They know a good
movie when they see it.
The
rest of the week, including tonight, I attended extremely long
rehearsals for The Tempest at our community theater. I play the dij
whenever Caliban gets into one of his moods, and occasionally with drums
during scene changes. I've decided that Tempest would work well in a
Gilligan's Island wrapping. Somebody get to work on that, OK? Kevin?
(Cue music) ... here on Caliban's Isle!
Hey, That reminds me, it's Shakespeare's birthday! Happy birthday,
Willy.
G: Blah! I caught John's cold! I thought I
was over it after about a day, but I have recurring snot and a few
aches. Blah!
I don't want to hype it up but I can't help it! I want a 2004 Prius -
it is going to be the best car in the world! It is going to be a
difficult wait until they come out in the fall, and then they might be
very popular and we'll have to keep waiting. It will be hard because
we'll probably have gotten rid of Dippy (the Escort) by then. And then
we'll worry about paying too much.
"They Live" has got to be the dumbest name for a movie I've ever heard.
Maybe it wouldn't be quite so bad for a Zombie movie or something. But
for this movie it made little sense. While at dinner Saturday night the
bunch of us came up with a parody idea - a movie about some sunglasses
that let you see people's farts. It will be called "They Smell."
