First Friday Flu
G: Thursday we took the Zuckermans to the
New Deal Cafe and Kory met us there. Maugorn was playing one of his "odd
Thursdays" gigs there, and Beth and especially Eric were impressed with
his repertoire, printed out in tiny lettering on a couple sheets of
paper. Then we headed over to the Looney's.
Visiting their house with all its magical wunders is something Eric had
looked forward to for a long time, and he gazed around in wonderment for
quite a while. Meanwhile Beth got into some games of Zendo and
one of Werewolf.
Eric exclaimed later how we managed to get Beth totally hooked on
Werewolf in two days (he doesn't like to play it).
The next day when I woke up I didn't really feel like getting up but I
had a lot to do so I did. I felt groggy and couldn't move very fast all
morning. As my 1pm class approached, I started to think I might be sick,
and I considered not going, but it would be difficult to cancel at such
short notice and I didn't want to miss a class as there are already a
lot of days off for that class due to holidays. I felt like going to
sleep during the whole class, but there were very few students and I
muddled through it. I headed over to the Co-op to do the shopping for
our party. I wondered as I walked zombie-like through the aisles how
embarrassed I would be if I collapsed or threw up. But I managed it.
I was VERY thankful that John was there when I got home. He came home
from work early to help me since he saw I wasn't doing well when he came
home for lunch. I was finally able to stop being responsible for things
and turn it all over to him. He put me to bed, and I drank a lot of
water and felt tons better and just went to sleep. Later I woke up and
took my temperature and had a 101 fever. A little later it was 102. By
now the party was started and John sequestered it to the downstairs,
sending visitors who dared brave my germs up to say hello. At some point
I agreed to take an Ibuprofen and maybe 10 minutes later I went from
feeling cold to feeling warmer and warmer and to sweating. I got
progressively better and alternated between sleeping and reading while
the party raged on below. As far as colds or flus go, this wasn't so bad
but it picked the worst day to hit me.
Saturday the Zuckermans left us to spend the remaining day of their
vacation with Beth's brother Tim and his wife Daniela who live in Takoma
Park. I was well enough (but still a bit tired) by the evening to attend
two birthday parties. The first we went to was at Sonya and Maugie's -
a multiple birthday for her and 4 other friends (Cathie, Marcia, Cat,
and Cheryl). Hope you all had a happy birthday! John forgot to bring
his didge but Maugorn found a metal pipe that worked just as well.
We left there, stopped at home to do the doggie duties, and took Sev
with us to Jacob's house for his birthday party. We arrived in the
middle of a Werewolf game that toK and Peter won as WEREWOLVES! This flabbergasted people in the game since they never even
suspected those two.
John and I played a game of ping-pong, then we joined the next Werewolf
game. I was an innocent villager, as usual, and right at the beginning,
I saw Liam's mouth twitch involuntarily as he answered the question,
"Are you a werewolf?" I pointed this out, and mentioned, as I always do,
that Liam is ALWAYS a werewolf, in every game I play. The fact that it
keeps happening makes me doubt it will happen again, but over and over
and over it has happened. I can't believe I didn't remember that twitch
later in the game... I was killed one night and my mouth dropped open in
disbelief when I saw Liam wake up as one of the werewolves (as did
Todd, who was one of the only people I was certain was innocent).
Anyway, after that we had fun with Jake's ping-pong activity, where 5
people continually run around the table hitting the ball back and forth
to the next person. It was silly silly fun! My favorite kind. The silly
silly fun continued when I found a game lying around called Cranium
Hoopla. I've played Cranium, it was kinda fun but way too easy. Hoopla
is a bit different; it's a cooperative game. I won't go into details,
just ask to play it sometime. A bunch of us played and I really liked it
and tried to run right out and buy a copy at my local Target and KB
Toys, but neither had it. Funagain.com didn't even have it. I found out
it's available at Starbucks - so I went there after my dental
appointment today and picked it up.
Sunday morning Marlene called and asked if we wanted to go downtown to
see the cherry blossoms and we agreed. Margit was going to borrow our
car and do some other things but decided to join us instead. We took the
Metro downtown and walked around through vast crowds (I pity the fools
who decided to drive around there that day), all the way around the
tidal basin. It was a lovely day. We headed back to Greenbelt to get
Marlene to her car so she could make her next appointment, then went
back out with our all day Metro passes (Marlene's was passed on to Sev)
to Dupont circle for Thai food. We tried to go to ThaiPhoon, but there
was a wait and we were hungry so we went to a place we've been to
before, Sala Thai. We ate appetizers and entrees and desserts, and John
had a Thai Iced Coffee.
J: We sure got our money's worth out of
those five dollar all-day Metro passes, by going back downtown and
spending $46 at Sala Thai, didn't we? <grin> For some reason the
waiter kept calling me Master. (e.g. "And for you, Master? What would
you like to drink?") That sort of creeped me out. Made me feel like I
was running a Zendo game without knowing the rule.
I'm rehearsing for an instrumental part in a Shakespeare play called
The Tempest. As my brother Thom's very short synopsis states, The
Tempest is "A Midsummer Night's Dream, set on a desert island." I don't
have any lines and I don't even have to appear on stage, thank Gob,
because I have nasty stage fright. I'm sitting off-stage with a few
percussionists, playing my dijeridoo at apropos times, like whenever
Caliban (a deformed slave) makes a speech. Only a couple weeks till the
show starts, and then they'll be playing practically every day for more
than a week. I'm not sure I can take it, so I haven't committed to the
schedule yet.
After rehearsing Tuesday night, I took Gina over to Dorian's to watch
most of the 1979 movie version of The Tempest, directed by the late Derek Jarman. It
was very strange, and very different -- more macabre and not as light as
the community play I saw rehearsed hours before.
