Filming Over
J:
We saw three long movies this week: the two films reviewed for this week
and the latest Lord of the Rings movie, which Gina had already seen. She
still thinks it deserves a yellow, but I would give it an orange, even
ignoring the blatant strayings from the original story. When Ginohn disagrees
over such matters, usually the person who remains most adamant wins out,
so this LOTR's HMR will remain yellow. My Dad, who has read Tolkien's story
about 30 times, demands a red and is considering a class action suit against
the producers. I think our
HMR still holds well for the film, but I also want to show Eric Zuckerman's
HMR again. I agree mightily with his review (and I like the rhyme, too!),
though I still crave a :| face --
LORD
OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS :)

The
wacky chick-flick subplot --
Plus,
Gimli's no clown!
On Friday,
after watching The Pianist (a wonderful Roman Polanski film) Gina, Kory,
Jenny and I walked across the square to the New Deal Cafe, and listened
to some guy play a few funny songs on guitar and banjo. I heard him mention
that his name was Dan, so I thought he was Dan
Hart, the singer we were planning to see the following night. I said,
"Hey, his name's Dan," to Gina, and she nodded and said she knew, that
our friend Terri had told her. When Dan's gig finished, he made the rounds.
As we walked towards the door, I loudly thanked Dan from across the crowded
room and said, "I'll see you tomorrow."
"What?
What's going on tomorrow?" he asked.
Thinking
he was joking I replied, "Yeah, whatever," and left the cafe, as he looked
quizzically on. Once outside, Gina explained that Dan was Banjer
Dan, not Dan Hart. That was funny. I felt a bit embarrassed. They look
nothing like each other.
The
next night we returned to the New Deal to see Dan Hart play. He plays a
nice guitar and sings his own folk songs and parodies of other folk songs.
He has very clever lyrics, following nicely in the footsteps of Tom Leher
for some of them, and getting serious in a Pete Seeger way on others. One
of my favorites was a parody of Tom Paxton's Marvelous
Toy song, in which the toy attacks anyone who tries to touch it. I
bought one of Dan's CDs and we talked with him and his wife about various
things. They're good people.
On
the way home from the New Deal I drove behind and almost into Rich, as
we attempted to turn our cars into "marvelous toys". Luckily, we were missed
by the nigh omnipresent Greenbelt police. Probably shouldn't play with
heavy, fast moving pieces of metal. But it was innocent fun and no one
was injured.
Kory,
Jenny, Gina, and I drew a few subcomics the other day, but I haven't found
time to scan them into our archive
yet. Maybe next week.
Last
night I played Odin's Ravens (still a great game, but we doctored the rules
a little) with Kory, and playtested an as yet unnamed game of Kory's, with
Leo and Kory. That's coming along great; I like to see a game take shape,
especially when it plays well.
I forgot
to mention last week that Joe came over with our little unkling Billy to
help us move two cabinet-shelf units from Dave and Diane's old house. Thanks
Joe! That night Gina and I set up the units, one in the bedroom and one
in the game room, and they look great! |
