Make Bush Not War
J:
On Saturday Gina and I took the metro downtown to another gigantic peace
rally. It was like a big anarchistic parade1.
(My favorite kind.) The route was 2 miles long with every mile filled,
so by the time the crowds reached the end, some hadn't started yet. People
filled the streets with signs, banners, little marching bands, puppets,
flags, and dancers. Every time the helicopter went by a great cheer went
up from the crowds. The police were most friendly. The park police later
estimated that the march drew well over the target of 30,0002
peaceniks. The pictures I saw from San
Francisco showed more crowds, which have been estimated at 150,000
by police there.
Speaking
of San Francisco, Lisa Lazar sent this cool picture of tree sitters in
front of City Hall.
I predict
the war with Iraq will begin by this month's end. I hope I'm wrong. If
for some reason Bush backed down now he would likely lose the next election
at least as badly as he lost the last one, but if he pushed the war quickly
there is a slight chance his approval rating would spike upwards. Unlike
many anti-war protesters, I don't feel that Bush et al are making war purely
for oil, though that is one factor. They have a fear of Iraq using nasty
weapons, so much so that they want to subdue the country by force even
if no weapons are found. This underlying fear is what causes them to react
against the UN Security Counsel's advice and rush to war. This fear brings
out such irrational statements as this one from Rumsfeld: "The fact that
the inspectors have not yet come up with new evidence of Iraq's WMD program
could be evidence, in and of itself, of Iraq's noncooperation." With these
words he presents Iraq with the impossible task of proving a negative.
FDR's famous quote, "The only thing we have to fear is Fear itself" suddenly
has new meaning.
G:
It was cold at the march. I was cold. Freezing for Peace, man. But it was
really great. So many people. So many signs. Creative artworks. Near the
end we found the Greenbelt Crew, after looking out for them all day. I
carried the sign for a little while, it said, "Greenbelt Maryland supports
PEACE not War!"
I found
a cute little pine cone the other day and brought it home. Tonight it came
to life, making crackling and popping noises. John is holding it in his
hand, warming it more and feeling it crackle and pop.
J:
It's really loud! And it's startling when it snaps. I think it opens slightly
with each pop. Gina's holding it now.
On
Monday Ken organized a game day at our house, attended at various times
by Kory, Gina, me, Ken, Kristin (Matherly), and Liam. We played (in this
order) Perudo, Medici, Hunter's and Gatherers, Perudo, Wise and Otherwise,
Klunker, and two short games of Werewolf. Halfway through the gaming we
all went to nearby Siri's Chef's Secret for delicious pad thai and veggie
curry. I didn't win a single game. Except for one game of Werewolf but
that doesn't count. There were only five players, one werewolf, and I played
the seer. We "executed" Liam the first day; he's always a werewolf.3

-
By
"anarchistic parade" I mean one without the usual ordered, formal groups
and floats; a people's parade. I don't mean political anarchists. Men,
woman, and children of many different age, ethnic, and race groups participated
in the march.
-
To
me and others, it looked like there were more people at this rally than
the October 2002 rally, despite the frigid weather. I'm guessing over 100,000,
but the only estimates I heard from the police (who had a helicopter) were
"well over 30,000." I wish they'd publish the aerial photos.

Except
for the next game, when I played the werewolf. I died on the second "day."
