Lord of the Days of Rogues

J: On Saturday Kory drove me up to the Days of Knights game store in Delaware, where we met Chris and played some game I can't remember the name of right now, but it had to do with placing pieces on a map of old Europe and scoring for higher concentrations of pieces in various spots. We also played Odin's Ravens (a light two player race game that I enjoy a lot, lately), Hunters and Gatherers (the Carcassonne "prequel"), and a cool game Kory is designing. We ate an excellent dinner at a new Lebanese place right next door to the store.

Meanwhile Gina went to the movies with a bunch of friends. They saw the latest Lord of the Rings release at the Uptown theater in DC, a kind of famous old movie theater with a big curved screen and balcony seats. I still haven't seen the film, which is OK; I don't mind waiting till the crowds die down.

The next day we went to the drum jam at the New Deal Cafe. I think the drum people of Greenbelt plan to jam the third Sunday of every month. I found a microphone for my dijeridu. Dorian insisted on "throwing in a little reverb" on the amp, which sounded pretty cool, especially when we mic'd the frog (a little wooden percussion instrument that Marlene gave us) and Paul's orange beer barrel. We got some neat foresty sounds from combinations with me whistling through the dij and Dorian playing the frog. The frog quickly became the hit of the evening. We had a low turnout of players this week, because some of them were rehearsing for Izolda's CD, to be released soon -- stay tuned! Plenty of spectators showed up, though, and they even applauded sometimes! I saw a girl dancing to our beat, in the back near the couches. I received a few compliments on my dijeridu sounds. It felt great to hear my dij when the drums played.

Renee lent us a tape of the first six or more Coupling episodes. Coupling, a BBC sit-com, is quite funny and has clever plots, usually multiple subplots woven together. I think Renee said Coupling is like a British Friends, but with more sex. I'm impressed with the show-to-show character development.

In between filling half my mind with TV mush, I'm filling the other half with iRogue, a PDA game that is very close to the classic Unix time-waster. I can't get enough of it; it's a good example of a great computer game. Even though the graphics, if you can call primitive ascii symbols "graphics," iRogue goes to my top computer games list because:

  1. It has a turn based structure, but doesn't feel turn based.
  2. It has a good system of small rewards.
  3. It is repeatable; every game is different.
  4. It's hard, I mean really hard to win, but still entertaining.
  5. iRogue is freeware, and open source, too!
G: So, when Kory got John to go to Delaware, he dropped Jenny off with me, and when they left, we took Booda for a long walk. We got back around 2 and went to the Berwyn Cafe for lunch, which we both enjoyed. We made it back home around 3, expecting Stacy and Chrisi to show up shortly thereafter for Booda's other walk. They showed up close to 4, and we went on another long one, over an hour, starting just two hours from the end of the first one. But do you think Booda minded?

Later, Craig and Terri picked up Jenny and I to go see LOTR: The Two Towers at the Uptown. Jenny banged her knee jumping out of the car on Connecticut Ave. and had to use me as a crutch to the theater. Gary met us there. The place was packed, but we managed to find a set of three seats right in front of a set of two seats all the way on the left hand side of the theater. The seats were very cushy. We could see the screen well enough but sometimes people and things looked distorted from the curve and the angle.

Jenny and I ran into Constantia in the restroom before the show, she was there to see it for the fourth time in that theater, and I don't know how many times altogether. I don't really get it because I don't think Fozzie is in this movie. ;) But I told John I would see it again with him, I liked it and there is plenty to look at.

Afterwards we went across the street to Sala Thai. Thai is my favorite kind of (restaurant) food, and Terri had never had it! I think she liked it, but not as much as I did. I used to always get vegetarian pad thai, and I've had it taste incredible at times, but not so much lately. So at some point I switched to curries (with coconut cream in the sauce), and I can't get enough of them. I wish there was more than one Thai restaurant in our immediate area.

J: [Errata - added 2003/01/16: Constantia wrote to say she has seen Fellowship a total of 11 times in theaters, 3 or 4 of them at the Uptown, and Towers 3 times, once at the Uptown. Also, from the text it may seem that Kory dragged me off to Days of Knights, which is not the case -- I went willingly and enthusiastically, especially since Kory did all the driving.]
